Men’s & Women’s Cross Country Heads to SoCon Championships

The UNC Greensboro (UNCG) men's and women's cross country teams will begin postseason competition with The 2024 Southern Conference (SoCon) Men's and Women's Cross Country Championships on Saturday, Nov. 2 at Furman Golf Course in Greenville, South Carolina. Furman is hosting the championships for the first time since 2015.

GREENSBORO, N.C. –  The UNC Greensboro (UNCG) men's and women's cross country teams will begin postseason competition with The 2024 Southern Conference (SoCon) Men's and Women's Cross Country Championships on Saturday, Nov. 2 at Furman Golf Course in Greenville, South Carolina. Furman is hosting the championships for the first time since 2015.

The men's eight-kilometer race begins at 10 a.m. and the women's five-kilometer race will follow at 10:45 a.m. At the conclusion of the women's race, there will be an awards ceremony to recognize the top teams and individual runners.

LAST TIME OUT FOR THE WOMEN

  • The women placed fourth out of seven teams at the Elon Invitational with all nine Spartans earning a top-50 mark.  
  • Sosa led the way for the Spartans, finishing in third place out of 69 competitors. She clocked in a time of 22:09.0, just 11 seconds from the individual champion, in the six-kilometer race.
  • Carlson placed 20th overall with her time of 23:20.3, while Tenley and Lillian finished in 27th and 28th place, respectively. Tenley ran the event in 23:58.1 and her sister posted a time of 23:59.5
  • Lind crossed the finish line in 33rd place with a time of 24:40.5 and Berrier followed in 35th place with a time of 24:45.8.

ABOUT THE WOMEN

  • The women concluded the 2023 cross country season competing at the 2023 NCAA Division I Southeast Regional Championships.
  • They finished 30th out of 34 teams totaling 834 points. Jenna Reiter, who graduated, competed in her third NCAA Regional and finished in 125th place, while Sosa was the second Spartan to cross the finish line taking home 143rd place.
  • At last year's SoCon Championship, the squad finished sixth out of 10 teams with 185 points.
  • Reiter paced the team with a 27th-place finish and a time of 18:36.5, while Sosa was next across the finish line with a 32nd-place mark and a time of 18:47.2.
  • The Spartan women tallied 39 points and were voted to finish sixth in The 2024 Southern Conference (SoCon) Preseason Poll.
  • The women began the season taking home a 10th-place finish out of 14 teams at the adidas XC Challenge.
  • The women return eight from last year's roster and added four freshmen.

LAST TIME OUT FOR THE MEN

  • The men placed 14th out of 18 teams at the Panorama Farms Invitational, hosted by Virginia.
  • Abdullahi was the first Spartan to cross the finish line of the eight-kilometer race. He placed 111th out of 197 competitors with a time of 25:19.7.
  • Keck followed and earned 114th place, clocking in a time of 25:21.0, while Ward ran the race in 25:26.8 placing 121st.
  • Long (133rd place) and Ruffner (135th place) finished seven seconds apart.

ABOUT THE MEN.

  • Ward was the only Spartan that competed at the 2023 NCAA Division I Southeast Regional Championships. Ward placed 127th overall, besting his mark from the previous year.
  • Long led the way for the Spartans at the SoCon Championships earning All-Conference second team honors and finishing ninth overall and Ward placed 25th overall. The team finished seventh overall.
  • The men totaled 39 points and tied with Western Carolina for sixth place in the 2024 SoCon Preseason Poll.
  • The men return 14 from last year's roster and have added five newcomers.
  • Earlier this year, the men took home ninth place at both the adidas XC Challenge and the Pirate Cross Country Invitational.
