Baseball Welcomes in Crosstown Foe N.C. A&T for Weekend Set

GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNC Greensboro (UNCG) baseball team will take on the North Carolina A&T (N.C. A&T) Aggies in a non-conference weekend series from Friday to Sunday at UNCG Baseball Stadium.

GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNC Greensboro (UNCG) baseball team will take on the North Carolina A&T (N.C. A&T) Aggies in a non-conference weekend series from Friday to Sunday at UNCG Baseball Stadium.

The crosstown rivalry between the Spartans, who are 7-9, and Aggies, who are 3-11, will begin on Friday with a 4:00 p.m. first pitch. A food truck will be in attendance for Friday's series opener at UNCG Baseball Stadium.

  • Sam Murchison leads the Spartans in total strikeouts with 28, which ranks 48th nationally.
  • Jay Miller is second on the team with 27 punchouts. He struck out 10 batters on March 1 vs. Pitt, marking a new career-high.
  • Left-handed pitcher Noah Chapman is third on the Spartans with 25 strikeouts.
  • Right-handed reliever Danny Thompson Jr. ranks 24th in the nation with three saves this season.

  • In addition, a total of six Spartans were recognized on Preseason All-SoCon Teams. They were Rob Ready (SP), Trey Truitt (DH), Holland (OF) and Grant Aycock (RP), who were named to the first team, while Shuey (SP) and Thompson Jr. (RP) rounded out the list on the second team.
  • Chapman is also back after being named to the SoCon All-Freshman Team in 2024.
  • The Spartans are coming off a historic season where they posted an overall record of 33-21, marking their 19th 30-win campaign in the program's 34-season history.
  • UNCG captured its third Southern Conference (SoCon) Regular Season Championship behind a conference record of 15-6 in 2024.
  • Entering the SoCon Tournament as the top seed for the first time since 2018, UNCG ended the 2024 campaign with losses to Wofford, 5-2, and ETSU, 10-7, at Fluor Field in Greenville, South Carolina.
  • UNCG led the SoCon a season ago in ERA (5.19), fewest runs allowed (297) and lowest opponent batting average (.267).
  • The Spartans' baseball roster is made up of 38 student-athletes, including 23 returners, eight newcomers and seven transfers.
  • Head Coach Cody Ellis is in his second year at the helm of the UNCG baseball program after leading the Spartans last season, who were projected to finish sixth in the conference, to a regular season championship.
  • He was named the 2024 SoCon Coach of the Year and had an interim tag removed following the season on May 28.

SCOUTING NORTH CAROLINA A&T

  • The Aggies hold an overall record of 3-11 to begin the season.
  • N.C. A&T is coming off its seventh straight loss, falling 14-2 on the road against NC State on Tuesday night in Raleigh, North Carolina.
  • The Aggies have been led offensively by Tyler Smith so far, who is batting .321 (17-for-53) with three doubles, a triple and two home runs.
  • The Aggies are 29th in the country, averaging 0.43 triples per game.
  • JT Taylor is second on the team with a .304 (14-for-46) average backed by the team's best slugging percentage (.609). He is also eighth in NCAA Division I with three triples this season.
  • Gavin Sentell and Angel Ortiz have held it down on the mound for the Aggies.
  • Sentell owns the team's best ERA at 4.20 with an opponent batting average of .268 in 15 innings of work so far.
  • Ortiz leads the Aggies with 17 strikeouts in 17.2 innings pitched. He leads the team with a 2-2 record.
  • N.C. A&T was voted to finish 10th out of the 12-team Coastal Athletic Association (CAA) after finishing last season at 11th in the league with a 9-17 mark in CAA play. The Aggies finished the year 25-28 overall.
  • Head Coach Ben Hall is in his 10th year at the helm of the Aggies baseball program.

SERIES HISTORY VS. N.C. A&T
The Spartans are 47-12 all-time when facing the Aggies. However, the series has been more even as of late, with both sides trading wins back-and-forth during the previous six meetings.

In one game against each other last season, N.C. A&T prevailed by a final score of 3-2 in 11 innings at World War Memorial Stadium in Greensboro.
