Baseball Welcomes in New Mexico State for Midweeks, Hosts UConn for Three-Game Series
GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNC Greensboro (UNCG) baseball team is set to host New Mexico State for a pair of midweek tests as well as UConn in a three-game series over the weekend at UNCG Baseball Stadium.
The Spartans will kick things off by taking on New Mexico State on Wednesday at 4:00 p.m. before hosting a three-game weekend series against UConn on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. UNCG will then face New Mexico State one final time next Tuesday at noon.

LAST TIME OUT FOR THE SPARTANS
- UNCG is on a four-game winning streak after defeating High Point, 12-10, on the road last Tuesday before sweeping crosstown foe North Carolina A&T with 9-4, 4-2 and 7-0 wins at UNCG Baseball Stadium on Friday, Saturday and Monday, respectively.
- The Spartans set new season-highs for home runs (4) and hits (14) in the win over High Point at Williard Stadium.
- Senior Trey Truitt had a big week for the Spartans and was named the Terminix Pest Performance of the Week. He batted .438 (7-for-16) in the four games and scored seven times.
- Jacob Budzik led the team last week with eight RBI, a .929 slugging percentage and was a perfect 3-for-3 stolen bases.
- Jeremy Wolf batted .389 (7-for-18) with three runs and two RBI.
- UNCG was a perfect 10-for-10 on stolen bases last week.
- Defensively, the Spartans only committed two errors in their four games last week.
- Hunter Shuey, Noah Chapman, Jay Miller and Grant Aycock earned the wins on the hill for the Spartans.
- Miller pitched seven complete innings and notched a career-high 11 strikeouts in the Spartans' 4-2 win on Saturday.
- The Spartans outscored and outhit the opposition last week by a 32-16 and 39-31 margin, respectively.
SCOUTING THE SPARTANS
- The Spartans own an overall record of 10-9 to begin the season and are riding a four-game winning streak.
- UNCG faced four consecutive Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) opponents, amounting to eight straight games from Feb. 18-March 4 and went 3-5 during the stretch.
- The Spartans opened the eight straight games against ACC foes with an upset over then-No. 13 Wake Forest at home, 4-0, on Feb. 18.
- UNCG stands at seventh in the country with three shutouts this season, ranks 17th nationally in sacrifice bunts (15), 23rd in walks allowed per nine innings (3.42) and 28th in strikeout-to-walk-ratio (2.83).
- Miller leads the Spartans in total strikeouts with 38, which ranks 33rd nationally.
- Right-handed pitcher Sam Murchison is second on the team with 30 punchouts while Chapman is third on the Spartans with 29 strikeouts.
- Right-handed reliever Danny Thompson Jr. ranks 37th in the nation with three saves this season.
- Murchison leads UNCG in wins with a 3-1 record, which, based on victories, stands tied for 49th in NCAA Division I.
- The Spartans set a new season-high for runs (13) on March 2 vs. Pitt at home.
- Trey Truitt leads the Spartans with a .339 (20-for-59) batting average and is tied for the team lead with five doubles. He hit two doubles and a home run at High Point last week.
- Wolf is second on the Spartans with a .313 (20-for-64) batting average. He is one of three Spartans with a triple this season.
- Four different Spartans are tied for the team lead with two home runs this season. They are: Parker Wight, Luke Holland, Zachary Walsh and Budzik.
- Holland leads UNCG with 11 RBI this season.
- Trey Truitt paces the team with 28 total bases.
- The Spartans were voted to finish first in the 2025 SoCon Preseason Coaches' Poll.
- Senior right-handed pitcher Rob Ready was named one of two SoCon Preseason Pitchers of the Year by the league. The other was Michael Harpster of ETSU.
- In addition, a total of six Spartans were recognized on Preseason All-SoCon Teams. They were Ready (SP), Trey Truitt (DH), Holland (OF) and Aycock (RP), who were named to the first team, while Shuey (SP) and Thompson Jr. (RP) rounded out the list on the second team.
- Chapman is also back after being named to the SoCon All-Freshman Team in 2024.
- The Spartans are coming off a historic season where they posted an overall record of 33-21, marking their 19th 30-win campaign in the program's 34-season history.
- UNCG captured its third Southern Conference (SoCon) Regular Season Championship behind a conference record of 15-6 in 2024.
- Entering the SoCon Tournament as the top seed for the first time since 2018, UNCG ended the 2024 campaign with losses to Wofford, 5-2, and ETSU, 10-7, at Fluor Field in Greenville, South Carolina.
- UNCG led the SoCon a season ago in ERA (5.19), fewest runs allowed (297) and lowest opponent batting average (.267).
- The Spartans' baseball roster is made up of 38 student-athletes, including 23 returners, eight newcomers and seven transfers.
- Head Coach Cody Ellis is in his second year at the helm of the UNCG baseball program after leading the Spartans last season, who were projected to finish sixth in the conference, to a regular season championship.
- He was named the 2024 SoCon Coach of the Year and had an interim tag removed following the season on May 28.
- Ellis has been at UNCG since he was first hired as assistant coach in the fall of 2022, leading the charge in recruiting and as the outfield coach before being promoted to interim head coach in January 2024 and head coach in May 2024.
SCOUTING NEW MEXICO STATE
- The Aggies hold an overall record of 10-10 to begin the season and are coming off a series win over Portland last weekend at home.
- After the Aggies won game one of the series on Friday, 12-5, they dropped game two Saturday, 18-8 in seven innings, before winning the series with an 11-10 win on Sunday.
- After facing UNCG on Wednesday, the Aggies will travel north to face the Liberty Flames this weekend before returning to face the Spartans in a second midweek game next Tuesday.
- New Mexico State is led offensively by Steve Solorzano, who is batting .377 (26-for-69) with the team's best on-base percentage (.522).
- Sheehan O'Connor ranks 23rd in the country with eight home runs this season. He also leads the team in RBI (18), total bases (52) and slugging percentage (.732).
- Saul Soto leads New Mexico State with a 2.00 ERA in 18 innings pitched. He leads the team with 17 strikeouts and an opponent batting average of .194.
- Jack Turner has amassed the most innings pitched for the Aggies. He has thrown 26.1 innings and owns a 4.44 ERA so far through five starts.
- New Mexico State finished last season with a 25-29 overall record as well as a 10-14 mark in Conference USA (CUSA).
- The Aggies were voted to finish in a tie for eighth in CUSA's Baseball Preseason Poll after finishing in seventh last season.
- Jake Angier became the 12th head baseball coach for the Aggies in the summer of 2023. He is in his second season at the helm of the program.

SCOUTING UCONN
- The Huskies are 6-10 overall and have played all but one of their games on the road. They are 1-0 at home, 4-7 on the road and 1-3 in neutral site games this season.
- UConn enters the week coming off a three-game series over the weekend at Campbell, where they dropped the final two games to lose the series two games to one.
- After winning game one on Friday, 6-5, the Huskies dropped two straight to the Camels, 7-6 in 10 innings on Saturday before falling 8-5 in Sunday's finale.
- UConn will make the short trek over to Greensboro after facing Duke on Tuesday and No. 17 North Carolina on Wednesday. Both games are at 4:00 p.m. in Durham and Chapel Hill.
- The Huskies' most-notable win to this point was a 6-2 upset over No. 14 Vanderbilt in Los Angeles, California, to close out the Dodger Classic back on March 2.
- Grant MacArthur is leading the Huskies with a .393 (22-for-56) batting average and 13 walks for a team-best .521 on-base percentage.
- Tyler Minick is second on the team with a .385 (20-for-52) batting average and leads the Huskies with six home runs and 22 RBI.
- Leading UConn in innings pitched, Oliver Pudvar owns a 3.00 ERA in 21 innings pitched. He owns a .211 opponent batting average with a team-high 24 strikeouts.
- Pudvar is the only pitcher on the Huskies' staff with more than one win, he is 2-0 on the season in five appearances with three starts.
- Brady Afthim has the only save by a UConn pitcher this season. He has struck out 18 hitters in seven appearances for 12 innings pitched.
- UConn was voted the favorite to win the BIG EAST with seven first-place votes in the league's preseason poll.
- Additionally, UConn's senior right-handed pitcher Ian Cooke was selected as the BIG EAST Preseason Pitcher of the Year, while UConn junior first baseman Maddix Dalena locked up Preseason Player of the Year accolades.
- The Huskies finished last season 35-26 overall with a 17-4 record in league play, securing an at-large bid in the NCAA Tournament and advancing to the super regionals.
- Head Coach Jim Penders is in his 22nd season at the helm for the Huskies in 2025. He is a five-time conference Coach of the Year.
SERIES HISTORY VS. THE HUSKIES
The Spartans own an all-time record of 6-0 over the Huskies since the first meeting during the 2001 season. The last meeting was for a three-game series in Greensboro during the 2008 campaign. UNCG won all three games from Feb. 29 to March 2, 2008, by a combined score of 34-7.
The Spartans have outscored the Huskies by a margin of 55-16 when going head-to-head.
