Men’s Basketball Claims Dominating Victory Over VMI, 84-50
GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNC Greensboro (UNCG) men's basketball team dominated in an 84-50 victory over the Keydets of VMI on Wednesday night at the First Horizon Coliseum in The Southern Conference (SoCon) action.
Wednesday's victory improved UNCG's win streak to three and it also extended the Spartans' win streak over the Keydets in regular season play to six.
For the seventh time this season, four Spartans registered double figures. Donovan Atwell led the way with 17 points and a career-best nine rebounds. Ronald Polite III followed closely behind with 13 points. Demetrius Davis and Jalen Breath chipped in for 10 points apiece.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Davis got the scoring started with a jumper in the paint at 19:14 to make it 2-0. VMI's AJ Clark chipped in a couple free throws at 18:58 to tie the game, 2-2. Breath put the Spartans back on top with a layup at 18:42 before VMI began a 7-2 run for a 9-6 lead. UNCG took an 11-9 advantage with a three-pointer from Atwell just before Polite III drove in for an easy layup at 16:29. VMI's TJ Johnson put the visiting team back on top from behind the arc, 12-11, for the Keydets' final lead of the game. UNCG responded with 18 unanswered points due largely to Atwell's three three-pointers in the sequence for a 29-12 lead. UNCG continued to widen its lead in the first half. The Spartans closed out the stanza with 10-straight points to secure a 52-23 lead for the team's second largest halftime score of the 2024-25 season.
VMI scored first coming out of the locker room with a 3-0 run just before Kenyon Giles hit a three from downtown for a 55-26 advantage. UNCG would go on to outscore VMI 32-25 in the second half. The Keydets were able to record the final seven points of the game, but it wouldn't be enough to keep UNCG from going on to claim the 84-50 victory.
