Softball Hits Past Elon, 9-2
ELON, N.C. – The UNC Greensboro (UNCG) softball team defeated in-state foe Elon on Sunday, 9-2, at Hunt Softball Complex.
The Spartans are now 3-2 this season. UNCG totaled 11 hits in the victory for its fifth-straight game with 10 or more hits.
UNCG has now won eight-straight games against Elon dating back to March 20, 2022.
UNCG has totaled 15 home runs in five games played.
- Jessie Shipley (2-for-3) and Grace Loftin (3-for-4) had multi-hit games for the Spartans.
- Macy Michael (1-for-4) and Shipley each had two RBI and two runs scored.
- This was the first complete game for Reese Byrd in the circle since April 30, 2022.
- She matched her season-best of five strikeouts.
- With Shipley on first with two outs, Loftin tripled to right field for the first run of the game, 1-0.
- Byrd retired three straight batters in the bottom of the first.
- After a scoreleass second inning, the Spartans broke the game open with six runs on five hits and one error.
- Shipley tallied her fifth homer of the season to lead off the inning and then Rylie Williams drove in Michael on a single to second base. Shipley later tallied another RBI as the Spartans batted around and she hit a RBI sacrifice fly for the 7-0 advantage.
- Michael crushed her third home run of the season in the top of the sixth driving in Kaylyn Belfield for a 9-0 lead.
- Elon's Gabi Schaal hit a two-run home run in the bottom of the sixth, cutting the deficit to seven, 9-2.
- Neither team was able to push across anymore runs in the seventh as the Spartans held on for the 9-2 victory.

The Spartans are scheduled to host a four-team tournament this coming weekend in the Spiro Classic at UNCG Softball Stadium. UNCG will host Merrimack (12:30 p.m.) and Georgetown (5:30 p.m.) on Friday. The Spartans will then battle Toledo (12:30 p.m.) and Georgetown (3:00 p.m.) on Saturday, followed by Toledo again on Sunday (12:30 p.m.).
