SoCon Announces Women's Golfer of the Week

GREENSBORO, N.C. – UNC Greensboro (UNCG) women's golf freshman Sophie Lauture has been named The Southern Conference (SoCon) Women's Golfer of the Week, as announced by the league office Wednesday.

The Concord, North Carolina, native tied for third while competing in her first collegiate tournament at the Golfweek Fall Challenge on Tuesday. She finished at five-under-par (208) in the three-day tournament, which guided the Spartans to a third-place finish. Lauture carded rounds of 71-65-72 and recorded a total of 39 pars and 10 birdies from Sunday to Tuesday.

"It means a lot to earn my first SoCon award, especially as a freshman early in my collegiate career," said Lauture. "It's a really big award and boosted my confidence. I hope to improve even more as a player and teammate as time goes on and succeed even more."

The Spartans set single-round records for the Caledonia Golf & Fish Club and the UNCG program as a whole on Monday. Lauture led the team at six-under par (65) in the second round while UNCG shot 13-under-par (271), breaking the previous course record of 277 set by Campbell in 2018. Additionally, it set a school record for the Spartans with the previous single-round record for the team (281) coming last fall at the Elon Women's Invitational.

This is Lauture's first SoCon weekly honor. The last time a UNCG women's golfer earned the award was on March 13, 2024, when Ava Romfo was honored after winning the Puerto Rico Classic.
