GREENSBORO, N.C. – Junior goalkeeper Emma Malone of the UNC Greensboro (UNCG) women's soccer team was named The Southern Conference (SoCon) Defensive Player of the Week, as announced by the league office Tuesday.

This is Malone's first weekly honor from the SoCon and the Spartans' first SoCon Player of the Week since Oct. 18, 2022, when Nadia Wilson earned the award and first Defensive Player of the Week since Sept. 27, 2022, when Abby Buchholz earned the recognition.

Malone assisted the Spartans to a 1-1 week, earning UNCG's first win of the season on Sunday at home against Charlotte. The junior tallied a season-high six saves in the 1-0 victory over the 49ers. This was UNCG's first shutout of the season and Malone's fifth zero in the back of her career.

Earlier in the week, the Spartans fought No. 22 Colorado in a tight 1-0 loss where UNCG held the Buffaloes scoreless for 70 minutes. The Wallingford, Connecticut native recorded two saves in the game.

Among the SoCon, Malone is fifth in goals against (4), save percentage (.750), sixth in goals against average (1.00), ninth in saves (12) and 10th in saves per game (3.00).

"I am so grateful to earn this award individually, but credit also goes to my teammates that work so hard in front of me all game," stated Malone. "I am glad that my team and coaches put the trust in me that they do and I am able to do my job the best I can."
