UNCG to Induct Two Coaches and Five Athletes into Athletics Hall of Fame

GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNC Greensboro (UNCG) athletics department announced the next class of inductees into the Athletics Hall of Fame in early October.

GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNC Greensboro (UNCG) athletics department announced the next class of inductees into the Athletics Hall of Fame in early October.

This year's class includes:

  • Paul Chelimo '14, a prolific cross country and track competitor who earned two All-America honors, is a two-time NCAA runner-up in the 5000-meter run, is a three-time Southern Conference (SoCon) Cross Country Champion, and won SoCon Runner of the Year three times.
  • Joey DeAngelis '95, a four-year member of the first baseball team who is still top-10 in numerous UNCG records, guided the squad to the 1994 Big South Conference Title and first ever trip to the NCAA Tournament by a UNCG Division I team.
  • Kyle Hines '08, a standout men's basketball star who still leads the program in scoring, field goals, field goal percentage, free throw attempts, blocks, and scoring average.
  • Joe Lowe '07, a dedicated and passionate wrestling student-athlete who is a three-time SoCon Champion at 174 lbs. and three-time SoCon All-Conference honoree, who was part of the 2006 team that had the best finish at the NCAA Championships, tying for 31st.
  • Marybeth McGirr, the first full-time women's golf coach in 1990 when the program was reinstated guiding the Spartans to two Big South Championships, earned two Coach of the Year awards, and helped the 1995 team to the NCAA East Regional as the first women's golf team to advance at the Division I level.
  • Linh Nguyen, promoted to cross country and track head coach in 2006 after being an assistant for five years prior guiding UNCG to be a perennial contender in the SoCon, including recruiting and coaching Paul Katam, and Chelsea and Shaina Sumney, and Hall of Famers Paul Chelimo and Ashley Schnell, while coaching 18 individual SoCon Champions during his 12 years coaching.
  • Kareen Qually '96, a dominant women's golfer who earned All-Big South honors all four years, part of 1995 & 1996 teams who won Big South Championships, and three-time NCAA East Regional participant.

The class will be inducted on October 5, 2024 during a brunch ceremony held in Cone Ballroom on the UNCG campus. More information to come.
