A gift from Dale S. Phipps ’82, ’86 and Barbara M. Phipps establishes the Dale and Barbara Phipps Nursing Scholarship Fund. It also furthers the Phippses’ commitment to three existing funds: the Dale and Barbara Phipps Accounting Scholarship Fund, the Kathy Walker Phipps Graduate Award in Creative Writing, and the Dale and Barbara Phipps Athletic Scholarship Endowment. 

Dale earned a B.S. in biology and a B.A. in accounting at UNCG. He credits his time as a student with setting him on the path to success. “The education I received at UNCG allowed me to be successful in my career and allowed me to be able to give back,” he says.   

His renewed connection with the University began in the 2000s, with basketball season tickets. Attending games became a meaningful part of his routine. At the time, he was entering a new chapter of life following the passing of his first wife, Kathy Walker Phipps. Later, after marrying Barbara Phipps, the two became familiar faces in the stands at Spartan basketball games.

Since then, the couple has financially supported many areas of the University, including Spartan Athletics. Dale has also given his time and expertise in various roles. He is a current member of the UNCG Board of Trustees and previously served as a member of the UNCG Foundation Board, the Bryan School’s Accounting and Finance Advisory Board, and the University Committee on Honorary Degrees.

The Phippses’ philanthropy is an expression of a deep connection to UNCG – and to experiences Dale had at the University. The Kathy Walker Phipps Graduate Award honors his first wife’s love of poetry and literature, the Dale and Barbara Phipps Accounting Scholarship Fund honors his degree from UNCG. Dale and Barbara, both retired, were CPAs. The newly established Dale and Barbara Phipps Nursing Scholarship Fund recognizes excellence in the School of Nursing.

Dale says, “Work-study in the School of Nursing was a great experience and helped me earn money toward my tuition. When the time came, giving back was something Barbara and I wanted to do.” 

Barbara says supporting nursing students is crucial. “There’s a huge issue with a nursing shortage in North Carolina,” she says. “The more we can grow local nurses, the better off we’ll all be.” 

This new scholarship adds to the impact they’ve already made on the School of Nursing. In 2021, the Barbara & Dale Phipps ’82, ’86 Student Skills Practice Lab was officially named. It provides students a place to practice the hands-on skills that are vital to nursing.

Chancellor Franklin D. Gilliam, Jr. recognizes the power of alumni support. “Our institution continues to benefit from the Phippses’ generosity, wisdom, and engagement with UNCG stakeholders. Their contributions help lead UNCG toward a bright future,” he says. 

Hannah Martin ’24, ’25 MS, who studied accounting, is one student who has benefited from the Phippses’ generosity. She was a recipient of the Dale and Barbara Phipps Accounting Scholarship.

“My scholarship allowed me to focus solely on my academics as I finished my education journey,” she says. “Scholarship funding is extremely important for UNCG students because it helps give everyone an equal opportunity in education.” 

For the Phippses, helping today’s students adds to the special feeling they get each time they step on campus. “I get a lot of satisfaction and pride out of my work with UNCG,” Dale says.
