Baseball Falls in Series Finale Against Western Carolina

GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNC Greensboro (UNCG) baseball team dropped the regular season finale, 11-6, to the Western Carolina (WCU) Catamounts in The Southern Conference (SoCon) on Saturday afternoon at UNCG Baseball Stadium.

GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNC Greensboro (UNCG) baseball team dropped the regular season finale, 13-6, to the Western Carolina (WCU) Catamounts in The Southern Conference (SoCon) on Saturday afternoon at UNCG Baseball Stadium.

UNCG finished 9-12 in the SoCon for sixth in the standings while WCU posted a 10-11 record in league play for fifth in the standings. Sunday's rubber match determined the fifth and sixth seeds for the 2025 SoCon Baseball Tournament, which begins next Wednesday.

Brayden Corn got the Catamounts on the board first, 1-0, when he hit a solo home run to center on the game's second pitch. After the bases loaded, Wyatt Stanley hit a sacrifice fly to left to score Trent Turner. Elijah Smith then blooped a single into right-center to score another pair of runs, making it 4-0 after one inning.

Western Carolina extended its lead to 6-0 in the second inning with Jack Spyke hitting a two-run home run to left.

The Spartans countered with two runs of their own in the bottom of the second. Case Kermode got the rally started with a one-out double to left. He then moved over to third on a single by Malachi Gales before scoring on an RBI groundout by Jose Perez. Jeremy Wolf scored Gales in the next at-bat with a double deep to left. After two stanzas, the Catamounts were leading the Spartans by four, 6-2.
 
Both sides scored one run during the third frame. After WCU pushed one across with a sacrifice fly hit by Trey Spees, Parker Wight doubled and then scored on a single by Luke Jenkins for UNCG. The Catamounts led 7-3 after three innings.

Both sides continued scoring in the sixth inning. The Catamounts got it started with four runs before the Spartans could score three of their own. WCU scored its runs with RBI singles by Mason Holton and Stanley before a fourth run scored on a wild pitch. For UNCG, a sacrifice fly from Wolf, a balk and RBI single batted by Brantley Truitt led to three runs scoring. After six frames, WCU was leading 11-6 over UNCG.

The Catamounts tacked on two more runs with Spyke hitting an RBI triple over UNCG's centerfielder's head to complete the cycle. WCU maintained the seven-run lead in the bottom of the ninth to win the finale, 13-6.

NOTES:

  • Noah Chapman, Mayson Dear, Rob Ready, Grant Aycock and Hunter Shuey combined for 17 strikeouts, the second-most for UNCG in a single game this season.
  • Truitt led offensively for UNCG with three hits.
  • Wight and Perez each had a pair of hits.
  • Wolf paced the team with two RBI.
  • Truitt stole the only base of the afternoon.
  • UNCG pitchers had the edge in strikeouts, 17-8.

The fifth-seeded Spartans will face No. 6 seed Wofford in the first round of the 2025 SoCon Tournament at Fluor Field in Greenville, South Carolina, on Wednesday at 7:00 p.m. in a single-elimination game.
