Men’s Basketball & No. 7 VMI Face Off In SoCon Quarterfinal on Saturday

GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNC Greensboro (UNCG) men's basketball team, who received the No. 2 seed, is set to compete in the 2025 Southern Conference (SoCon) Tournament where they will go head-to-head with No. 7 VMI in a quarterfinal matchup on Saturday at 2:30 p.m. at Harrah's Cherokee Center.

GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNC Greensboro (UNCG) men's basketball team, who received the No. 2 seed, is set to compete in the 2025 Southern Conference (SoCon) Tournament where they will go head-to-head with No. 7 VMI in a quarterfinal matchup on Saturday at 2:30 p.m. at Harrah's Cherokee Center.
 
The Spartans are entering the tournament with a 20-11 overall mark and a 13-5 SoCon record, while the Keydets are 14-18 overall and 7-11 in the conference.
 
UNCG and VMI have not faced off in postseason play before. The Spartans are 8-16 in SoCon Quarterfinal games.
 
The winner of the Spartans versus the Keydets will move on to a semifinal game set for Sunday, March 10 at 6:30 p.m. versus the winner of No. 3 ETSU versus No. 6 Wofford.

LAST TIME OUT FOR THE SPARTANS

  • UNCG got past Samford in their regular season finale, 108-100, last Saturday in Fleming Gym.
  • This was the first win over Samford since 2022 for the Spartans.
  • This was the second win against the Bulldogs for Head Coach Mike Jones as a Spartan.
  • This was the eighth year in Jones' time as a head coach with 20 or more wins and third-straight season with 20 or more wins and third-straight season with 20 or more wins in the Blue & Gold.
  • This was the second game this season that the Spartans have reached the century mark.
  • Four from UNCG tallied double figures, including Kenyon Giles with a team-high 25 points.
  • Demetrius Davis registered a career-high 22 points, while Ronald Polite III had 18 points and Donovan Atwell had 14 points.
  • This was the third game this season that UNCG has averaged .500 or better from three-point range and 10th time with a .500 or better field goal percentage.

SCOUTING THE SPARTANS

  • Three Spartans are averaging double figures, including Giles (15.7), Atwell (13.7) and Ronald Polite III (13.2).
  • Breath (7.0), Malik Henry (4.4) and Miles Jones (3.6) are pacing the team in rebounds per game.
  • The Spartans are outscoring their opponents, 73.4-65.4, three-pointers per game, 9.4-7.2, rebounds per game, 36.7-33.9, and steals per game, 6.1-5.5.
  • The Spartans are in the top 50 nationally in six categories, including field goal percentage (15th/39.9), turnovers per game (22nd/9.8), 27th three-point percentage (27th/37.6), scoring defense (29th/65.4), three-point percentage defense (29th/30.5) and three-pointers per game (45th/9.4).
  • The Spartans are leading the SoCon in field goal percentage defense, scoring defense, three-point percentage and turnovers per game.
  • Nationally, Atwell is ranked in the top 50 in total three-point field goals made (20th/96), three-pointers per game (24th/3.10), three-point attempts (29th/238) and three-point percentage (47th/40.3).
  • Giles joined the Spartans after two years at Radford, where he was first on the team with 1.4 steals per game and second on the team with 14.3 points per game.
  • Polite III and Henry both came to UNCG with four years previously at George Mason. Polite III has averaged 7.38 points per game and 2.5 assists per game. Henry contributed a 62.5-percentage in field goals during his time with the Patriots.
  • Davis joined the Spartans after playing the last two seasons at Chattanooga and one year each at Lawson State Community College and Augusta.
  • UNCG concluded last season 21-11 overall and 12-6 in SoCon and it was the seventh year out of eight with 20 or more wins for the Spartans.
  • The Spartans were voted to finish sixth in the 2024-25 SoCon Preseason Coaches' Poll and Atwell was voted to the 2024-25 Preseason All-SoCon team.
  • The Spartans returned nine from last year's roster and added seven newcomers.

 
SCOUTING VMI

  • VMI earned the No. 7 seed in the SoCon Tournament after its 7-11 SoCon record.
  • The Keydets recently defeated The Citadel, 73-62, and it was VMI's first win over the Bulldogs at the SoCon Tournament.
  • VMI ranks among the top 50 nationally in three point attempts per game (27th/28.2) and free throw percentage (41st/76.3).
  • VMI is leading the SoCon in free throw attempts per game, free throws made per game and free throw percentage.
  • Rickey Bradley Jr. is pacing the league and is 37th nationally in free throws (145) and is 46th in the country with 183 free throws.
  • Bradley, Jr. was named to the All-SoCon Third Team and AJ Clark was recognized on the SoCon All-Defensive Team.
  • TJ Johnson stands out in the top 50 in the country in three-point attempts (38th/232), total three-point field goals made (43rd/87) and three-pointers per game (45th/2.90).
  • Bradley Jr. is leading the team with 16.0 points per game.
  • Johnson paces the squad with 87 three-pointers.
  • Augustinas Kiudulas leads the Keydets with 6.4 rebounds per game.
  • Tan Yildizoglu is the best passer on the team with 111 dimes.
  • AJ Clark stands out defensively with 27 blocked shots and 55 steals.
  • VMI was voted to finish last in the 2024-25 SoCon Preseason Coaches' Poll.
