Men’s Basketball Set for Season Opener at Kansas State

GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNC Greensboro (UNCG) men's basketball team is set to begin its 2025-26 season in Manhattan, Kansas, as they take on Kansas State on Tuesday at 8:00 p.m. ET/7:00 p.m. CT in Bramlage Coliseum.

This will be the first showdown between the Spartans and Wildcats in program history.
 

 
SCOUTING THE SPARTANS

  • UNCG went 20-12 overall and 13-5 in The Southern Conference (SoCon) in the 2024-25 season.
  • This was the eighth year out of nine with 20 or more wins for the Spartans
  • The Spartans concluded the 2024-25 season ranked 14th in three point percentage defense (30.1), 15th in field goal percentage defense (40.0), 25th in scoring defense (65.4), 26th in turnovers per game (9.9) and 32nd three point percentage (37.2). 
  • Head Coach Mike Jones enter his fifth year at the helm of the Blue & Gold after achieving his third year out of four winning 20 or more games last season with the Spartans.
  • UNCG entered the 2025 SoCon Tournament as the second seed, marking the third consecutive year under Jones that the team has secured a top-three seed. 
  • The 2025-26 roster features three returners and 12 newcomers.
  • UNCG was picked to finish fifth in the SoCon Preseason Coaches' Poll with 43 votes.  
  • The Spartans will play 10 games in Fleming Gymnasium and four games in the First Horizon Coliseum this season.

SCOUTING KANSAS STATE

  • The Wildcats concluded the 2024-25 season at 16-17 overall and 9-11 in the Big 12 Conference.
  • The squad defeated Arizona State, 71-66, in the first round of the Big 12 Tournament, but fell to Baylor, 70-56, in the second round to end the season.
  • K-State returns four players and welcomes 10 newcomers.
  • The Wildcats were picked to finish ninth in the Big 12 Preseason Poll with 117 votes.
  • P.J. Haggerty was tabbed to the Preseason All-Big 12 Team.
  • Haggerty has also been named to the preseason watch list for the Jerry West Shooting Guard of the Year Award and was among 20 players named to the watch list for the 2026 National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) Division I Player of the Year award.
  • Haggerty scored a game-high 23 points in the team's exhibition game at Missouri, connecting on 8-of-14 field goals, including 2-of-4 from 3-point range, and 5-of-7 free throws to go with a game-high six assists, two steals and two rebounds in just under 25 minutes of action.
  • C.J. Jones is the returning leading scorer for the Wildcats, averaging 5.7 points per game last season.  
  • Jones played in all 33 games with nine starts in his first season in 2024-25 after starting his college career at UIC where he played in 62 games from 2022-24.
  • David Castillo returns after playing in 32 games as a true freshman last season, averaging 2.4 points, 0.6 rebounds and 0.8 assists in 10 minutes per game

UP NEXT
The Spartans host Triad foe Elon for their 2025-26 home opener on Saturday in Fleming Gymnasium at 4:00 p.m.

Prior to the game, UNCG students are invited to Spartan Madness, taking place at Moran Commons in front of the Fountain View Dining Hall on campus. The home opening event is set to begin at 2:00 p.m. and everyone will march over to Fleming Gymnasium at 3:00 p.m. to cheer on the Spartans.
