Men’s Basketball Hosts SoCon Leading Chattanooga Thursday, Welcomes Samford Saturday
GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNC Greensboro (UNCG) men's basketball team, who is currently in second place in The Southern Conference (SoCon) standings, will host the conference-leading Chattanooga on Thursday at First Horizon Coliseum and then third-place Samford on Saturday at Fleming Gymnasium.
UNCG is 19-10 overall this season with a 12-4 SoCon mark. The Mocs are leading the SoCon with their 21-8 overall record and 13-3 conference record. Samford will face VMI in Lexington, Virginia, on Thursday before coming to Greensboro. The Bulldogs are 21-8 overall and 11-5 in the SoCon. The 2025 SoCon Tournament bracket will be finalized late Saturday night.

LAST TIME OUT FOR THE SPARTANS
- UNCG split its SoCon games last week, falling to ETSU, 65-49, and defeating Mercer, 78-61.
- Against the Bears, four Spartans scored double figures, including Jalen Breath who registered 16 points and 14 rebounds for his fifth double-double of the season and seventh of his career.
- Donovan Atwell paced the Spartans with 17 points, while Kenyon Giles and Demetrius Davis each had 15 points.
- The Spartans capitalized on their 41.8 field goal percentage and 46.67 three-point percentage to come from behind.
- After a 24-6 run, 50-35, to begin the second half, the Spartans never looked back to hold on for the 78-61 win.

- Three Spartans are averaging double figures, including Giles (15.5), Atwell (14.0) and Ronald Polite III (12.8).
- Breath (6.9), Malik Henry (4.4) and Miles Jones (3.8) are pacing the team in rebounds per game.
- The Spartans are in the top 50 nationally in six categories, including field goal percentage defense (13th/39.3), three-point percentgage defense (18th/29.9), scoring defense (15th/63.9), three-point percentage (32nd/37.5), turnovers per game (34th/10.1) and three-pointers per game (45th/9.4).
- The Spartans are leading the SoCon in field goal percentage defense, scoring defense, three-point percentage, three-point percentage defense and turnovers per game.
- Nationally, Atwell is ranked in the top 50 in total three-point field goals made (11th/92), three-pointers per game (16th/3.17), three-point attempts (22nd/226) and three-point percentage (43rd/40.7).
- Atwell is leading the conference in three-point attempts and total three-point field goals made.
- UNCG has the advantage against its foes in points per game, 72.6-63.9, three-pointers per game, 9.4-7.0, rebounds per game, 37.0-34.0, and assists per game, 13.2-10.3.
- Giles joined the Spartans after two years at Radford, where he was first on the team with 1.4 steals per game and second on the team with 14.3 points per game.
- Polite III and Henry both came to UNCG with four years previously at George Mason. Polite III has averaged 7.38 points per game and 2.5 assists per game. Henry contributed a 62.5-percentage in field goals during his time with the Patriots.
- Davis joined the Spartans after playing the last two seasons at Chattanooga and one year each at Lawson State Community College and Augusta.
- UNCG concluded last season 21-11 overall and 12-6 in SoCon and it was the seventh year out of eight with 20 or more wins for the Spartans.
- The Spartans were voted to finish sixth in the 2024-25 SoCon Preseason Coaches' Poll and Atwell was voted to the 2024-25 Preseason All-SoCon team.
- The Spartans returned nine from last year's roster and added seven newcomers.

- Chattanooga was voted to finish second in the 2024-25 SoCon Preseason Coaches' Poll.
- This will be the 58th meeting between the Spartans and Mocs with UNCG leading the overall series, 29-28. UNCG won the game, 78-75, on a buzzer-beating shot from Polite III. The Spartans have a 7-4 advantage in the last 11 games.
- The Mocs are on a nine-game win streak, which dates back to Jan. 25.
- Chattanoooga is in the top-25 nationally in assist/turnover ratio (6th/1.71), assists per game (12th/17.3) and effective field goal percentage (24th/.559).
- The Mocs are leading the Conference in assist/turnover ratio, assists per game, effective field goal percentage, field goal percentage, free throw percentage and winning percentage.
- Honor Huff is nationally ranked 13th in total three-point field goals made (91), 19th in three-pointers per game (3.14) and 24th in three-point attempts (223).
- Chattanooga has the edge over its opponents in points per game (78.7-72.4), three-pointers per game (9.5-8.3) and assists per game (17.3-12.7).
- Four Mocs are averaging double figures, including Huff (14.2), Bash Wieland (14.0), Trey Bonham (13.6) and Frank Champion (11.6).
- Champion is pacing the team with 4.8 rebounds per game and 1.19 blocks per game.
SCOUTING SAMFORD
- Samford was voted to finish on top of the league in the 2024-25 SoCon Preseason Coaches' Poll, earning six of 10 first-place votes.
- This will be the 38th meeting between the Spartans and Bulldogs with UNCG having the slight edge, 20-17, in the overall series. Samford has won the last seven meetings, while UNCG last won on Jan. 22, 2022, 61-58, in Greensboro, North Carolina.
- The Bulldogs most recently defeated Western Carolina, 93-72, and will face VMI before traveling to Greensboro.
- Samford has the edge over its opponents in points per game (82.6-73.1), three-pointers per game (11.0-8.0), rebounds per game (36.6-35.4), assists per game (16.8-15.1) and steals per game (10.0-8.3).
- Three Bulldogs are averaging double figures, including Trey Fort (14.4), Jaden Brownell (13.6) and Rylan Jones (11.4).
