, N.C. – UNC Greensboro (UNCG) Intercollegiate Athletics celebrated a landmark moment during halftime of the men's basketball game on Saturday against Elon with the official renaming of Fleming Gymnasium to Bodford Arena. This historic moment for the department was made possible through a transformational $2 million gift from the Bodford family. This generous support represents the largest unrestricted gift in the history of UNCG Athletics, as well as the first associated with naming a competitive athletic facility.
"On behalf of my family, I'm honored to help contribute to the legacy of UNCG Athletics in this storied space," said Jason Bodford. "We're grateful for our continued relationship with the department, as it has always prioritized the student-athlete experience. This gymnasium already holds so many lasting memories, and we are excited to see future champions forged here."
Al and Brenda Bodford, along with their two children, Amy and Jason, were born and raised in the Triad and have called Greensboro home for more than 35 years. Ardent supporters of Spartan Athletics, the Bodfords have watched with pride as UNCG's programs have continued to grow and excel.
"This gift from the Bodford family is a powerful expression of belief in our student-athletes, our coaches and the future of Spartan Athletics," stated Chancellor Dr. Frank D. Gilliam. "Their generosity not only strengthens our athletic programs but also exemplifies the spirit of commitment and excellence that drives our university forward. The Bodford name will now be part of the memories made here — moments of teamwork, perseverance, and pride that define what it means to be a Spartan."
Fans in attendance at the men's basketball game received a commemorative UNCG hat with Bodford Arena stitched on the back.
"I want to thank the Bodford family for this visionary gift to UNCG Athletics," Director of Athletics Brian Mackin said. "This gift comes at a defining moment for UNCG Athletics, fueling our five-year vision to elevate our student-athletes, facilities, staff, and community."
The arena is home to volleyball, women's basketball and men's basketball and was opened on campus in June 1989. Before the 2006-07 season, the facility underwent a facelift, which included improving seating amenities, and the capacity is more than 1,800.
The venue was originally named on Dec. 1, 1994, for Michael B. Fleming, who was a Greensboro civic leader whose advocacy at the highest levels of state government was instrumental in the construction of the Coleman Building.
