Men’s Soccer Draws No. 9 Virginia 1-1 on the Road
GREENSBORO, N.C. – The No. 19 UNC Greensboro (UNCG) men's soccer team drew No. 9 Virginia, 1-1, in Charlottesville, Virginia, at Klöckner Stadium on Tuesday night. Colton Sessoms scored the equalizer in the 57th minute and Seth Wilson turned in a career-best six saves to secure the draw.
HOW IT HAPPENED
UNCG had trouble settling in early as the Cavaliers dominated possession in the first 10 minutes of action. Virginia took three shots and two corner kicks in the early minutes developing its offense leading the Cavaliers to a goal in the 11th minute for a 1-0 advantage. The Spartans settled in quickly after conceding the early goal, taking nine shots in a 15-minute span. The most dangerous attempt came from Sami Lachekar in the 29th minute. A corner was whipped in from Julien Le Bourdoulous which found Lachekar on the back post, but his shot attempt was deflected off the post and cleared away by the Virginia defense before the rebound could be fielded by the UNCG attack. The match entered halftime with UNCG down 1-0.
The second half saw a back-and-forth battle with both teams jockeying for possession. In the 57th minute, a free kick from Le Bourdoulous found its way into the box and was headed by Magnus Kjoller. The Virginia goalkeeper made the save, but the ball fell to the feet of Lachekar who tapped a pass to Sessoms to score the equalizer. The Cavaliers saw a renewed offensive drive after the goal, taking eight shots to try and rescue the lead. However, Wilson and the Spartan defense were up to task, making three saves and blocking numerous shots in the final 15 minutes of action, while down a man, to end the game at 1-1.
