GREENSBORO, N.C. – John Gabelic, a rising senior on the UNC Greensboro (UNCG) men's tennis team will compete in the 2025 Federation Internationale du Sport Universitaire (FISU) World University Games starting on Thursday, July 17 in Germany.
From July 16-27, around 8,500 student-athletes and officials from over 100 countries will compete for medals in 18 sports – making this one of the largest multi-sport events in the world in 2025. FISU was founded in 1949 and has been a key driver to expand the role and reach of university sport around the world. FISU believes that sports values and sports practice work in perfect synchronicity within one's university studies.
A native of Linköping, Sweden, Gabelic will compete in the men's singles round of 64 starting on Thursday in Essen Germany at the ETUF-Tennisriege. The Spartan will face Mariano Tammaro from Italy.
Gabelic will be paired with Nikola Slavic, a former Ole Miss' men's tennis student-athlete, during the men's doubles competition that begins on Friday.
"I feel honored to represent my country and my university in this world event," stated Gabelic. "I'm very excited to see the tennis level at this tournament and I will take this experience with me going into my senior year at UNCG. Go Spartans!"
Over the course of Gabelic's time at UNCG, he has accumulated a 23-46 singles record and a 28-36 doubles mark. He was voted The Southern Conference (SoCon) Player of the Week on Feb. 20, 2024, after earning a dominating 6-2, 6-3 win. He has been selected as a 2023-24 & 2024-25 College Sports Communicators All-District® Team member, is a two-time ITA Scholar-Athlete and been named to the ITA All-Academic Team twice.
