Baseball Earns 9-4 Victory Over North Carolina A&T
GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNC Greensboro (UNCG) baseball team earned a 9-4 victory over North Carolina A&T to begin a non-conference weekend series on Friday at UNCG Baseball Stadium.
Jacob Dilley drove in the first run for the Spartans during the opening inning when he knocked a single through the left side to score Trey Truitt from third, which made it 1-0.
The Aggies answered in the second inning with Nick DiCarlo singling into shallow right to score Savoi Edwards. However, the Spartans had an answer to reclaim the lead, 2-1, with Jose Perez batting a ball to short, which allowed Jacob Budzik to score from third.
The fourth frame saw the Aggies tie the game, 2-2, with a single up the middle by Bruce Wyche to score Edwards from second. UNCG kept the game tied with Trey Truitt relaying a throw to Perez who fired the ball to Dilley at the plate, where he cut down Wyche attempting to score from first on what was a double to the wall in right by DiCarlo.
UNCG scored another run to reclaim a 3-2 lead in the bottom of the fourth. After Malachi Gales led off the inning with a hard-hit single to third, he advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Perez and then scored on a single lined to left by Jeremy Wolf.
Trey Truitt hit a sacrifice fly out into left-field foul territory during the fifth inning, which allowed Parker Wight to score from third to extend the Spartans' lead to 4-2.
The Aggies cut the deficit back to one in the seventh with AJ Jones hitting a single into left to score Wyche from second. Jones then scored to tie it at 4-4 when JT Taylor doubled off the wall in left.
The Spartans responded in a big way, piling on five runs with three hits and help from three errors in the seventh. Wight scored Trey Truitt for the first run, which made it 5-4. Brantley Truitt then singled through the right side to score Luke Holland and Wight. Dilley then scored on a ball batted by Budzik to third that was botched. Malachi Gales drove in Budzik for the final run, making it 9-4, when he chopped the ball back to the pitcher, who made an error by airmailing the first baseman and allowing Budzik to score.
Left-handed pitcher Noah Chapman returned to the mound in relief for the ninth and secured the win with a three-pitch inning for the Spartans.
