Women’s Soccer Falls to Samford in Regular Season Finale
GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNC Greensboro (UNCG) women's soccer team fell in its regular season finale to the Samford Bulldogs, 2-1, in The Southern Conference (SoCon) action on Sunday afternoon at UNCG Soccer Stadium.
Morgan Brubaker recorded her first goal of the season and fourth of her career in the contest.
HOW IT HAPPENED
UNCG opened the scoring early in the contest after a deflection from the Samford defense allowed Taylor Mentzer to direct the ball towards Brubaker. Brubaker slid the ball past the Samford goalkeeper to put the Spartans up 1-0 in the fourth minute. The Bulldogs were able to find the equalizer in the 12th minute with Sarah Holland finding the back left of the net. About eight minutes later, Samford took the one-goal lead with Samantha De Luca making the pass to Mamie Carman, for a 2-1 advantage in the 21st minute. UNCG had a good look in the final minute as the half winded down. Laney Smith took the last shot of the half, but Samford goalkeeper's was there for the save giving the Bulldogs a 2-1 advantage heading to the break.
The second half was more of a defensive battle between the Bulldogs and Spartans. However, Samford was able to outshoot UNCG, 8-5, in the final 45 minutes. UNCG had another good look in the final minute with Mia Hasan taking a shot that was blocked by a Samford defender, allowing the Bulldogs to escape with the 2-1 win.
