Chapman and Thompson Jr. Shine as Baseball Upsets No. 13 Wake Forest with Two-Hit Shutout
GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNC Greensboro (UNCG) baseball team upset the No. 13 Wake Forest Demon Deacons with a 4-0 victory on Tuesday night at UNCG Baseball Stadium.
The Spartans, who are now 3-1 on the campaign, limited the Demon Deacons to just a pair of hits on the way to their second shutout win of the season. Southpaw sophomore Noah Chapman started on the mound for UNCG and pitched five brilliant shutout innings with just one hit and three walks allowed while striking out seven. Danny Thompson Jr. then came out in relief to start the sixth and pitched the remaining four innings also with one hit against while having two walks and seven strikeouts.
The Spartans wasted no time plating the game's first run. After UNCG loaded the bases with two outs, Trey Truitt chopped a ball to short, which was botched by Wake Forest's shortstop and allowed Zachary Walsh to score from third and make it 1-0 Spartans.
UNCG threatened with two outs in the bottom of the third inning to load the bases. Jack Pokorak eventually scored from third on a wild pitch to make it 2-0 UNCG.
In the fifth frame, UNCG tacked on two more runs after Truitt hit a leadoff double into the corner in right. Truitt later scored from second following an errant throw to first by a Demon Deacon after a bunt to third by Jeremy Wolf. Wolf went on to score as well, making it 4-0 after dashing home on an RBI groundout to short from Jacob Budzik.
The Spartans hung on the remaining four frames for a 4-0 shutout over the nation's No.13-rated team, marking their first win over a ranked opponent since beating then-No. 13 NC State, 18-3, last season in Raleigh on March 12. It also is UNCG's first shutout over a ranked opponent since beating No. 4 South Carolina, 1-0, on the road on Feb. 19, 2017.
