Cone Health and UNCG Team Up to Elevate Student-Athlete Care
Spartans will benefit from streamlined sports medicine care.
GREENSBORO, N.C. - Cone Health and the University of North Carolina at Greensboro (UNCG) have signed a five-year agreement enhancing medical care for student-athletes. Under this agreement, Cone Health employs UNCG's certified athletic trainers and makes changes to speed up and provide quality care for student-athletes.
In conjunction with the agreement, Cone Health will be the exclusive healthcare system for UNCG Athletics. This will be one of the largest sponsorship deals in UNCG Athletics history.
Athletic trainers at UNCG will report to a medical director rather than the athletics department. This means a direct, uninterrupted focus on student-athlete care, so they are seen faster and get timely treatment.
A Cone Health physical therapist will be on campus 2.5 days per week, providing timely treatment. A dedicated Cone Health OrthoCare liaison specializing in the treatment, rehabilitation and prevention of injuries and disease, will ensure advanced imaging appointments (such as MRIs) within 24-48 hours. Athletic trainers will gain full access to Cone Health's resources, ensuring student-athletes get the specialized care they need more quickly and more efficiently.
Cone Health's OrthoCare physicians, Dr. Steven Bokshan, Dr. Dana Brooks and Dr. Scott Dean, have been UNCG's team doctors for years. This agreement formalizes and strengthens that relationship and brings athletic trainers to the forefront of the care team.
"We are proud to partner with Cone Health to create a comprehensive medical model at UNCG Athletics that prioritizes the health and well-being of our student-athletes," stated Siobhan Huggins-Sullivan, assistant athletic director for sports medicine. "This work will elevate the quality of care provided and expand the range of on-campus services, ensuring our student-athletes receive exceptional support both on and off the field. Cone Health has been an invaluable partner to UNCG Athletics and we look forward to building on this strong partnership in the years to come."
UNCG Chancellor Franklin D. Gilliam, Jr. notes that this enhanced partnership between Cone Health and UNCG exemplifies the mission of both the University and UNCG Athletics. He stated, "UNCG and Cone Health are both long-standing anchor institutions in Greensboro and this is just one aspect of our robust partnership. Both UNCG Athletics and Cone Health will always have student-athlete well-being top of mind."
"This work will deepen Cone Health's longstanding relationship with UNCG and modernizes the care of student-athletes," said Bokshan. "Through this model, Cone Health will ensure the athletic training staff remains a highly valued piece of the medical care of student-athletes and that the health of student-athletes always remains a top priority."
