Women’s Basketball Claims Regular Season Sweep Over Chattanooga in 58-50 Victory
CHATTANOOGA, TENN. – The UNC Greensboro (UNCG) women's basketball team earned a 58-50 victory over Chattanooga on Thursday night in McKenzie Arena to claim the regular season sweep over the Mocs in The Southern Conference (SoCon) action.
Thursday's win marked the third time in program history and last time since the 1998-99 season that UNCG claimed both regular season wins over Chattanooga.
Jayde Gamble and Makiah Asidanya led the team in double-figures with 15 and 13 points, respectively.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Both teams traded baskets before a three-pointer from Nya Smith gave UNCG the 5-2 advantage to never allow Chattanooga to lead in the game. The Spartans held the 14-4 advantage over the Mocs after concluding the first quarter with nine unanswered points.
A free throw from Chattanooga's Caia Elisaldez would be the only scoring from either team for the first 3:09 of the second quarter. Jaila Lee got the scoring started for the Spartans after driving in for a layup at 6:51 for the 16-5 advantage. Chattanooga held the slight scoring edge over the Spartans in the second frame, 8-7. However, UNCG was able to hold the nine-point lead over Chattanooga heading to the locker room, 21-12. The 12 points from the Mocs was the home team's second lowest halftime score of the season. In addition, their lowest score of the season was when UNCG hosted Chattanooga earlier this season and led the team 38-13 at the half.
The Mocs came out of the locker room to notch five-straight points. A free throw from Smith and jumper from Asidanya allowed UNCG to continue its lead, 24-17. The Spartans held the 19-18 scoring advantage in the third quarter after Jailah Clark-Jones launched a corner three with 26 seconds left securing the 40-30 lead heading to bench.
The fourth quarter was the only one in which Chattanooga controlled the momentum by outscoring UNCG, 20-18. However, UNCG maintained the lead. The remainder of the game went back-and-forth between both teams. With 34 seconds remaining, Elisaldez launched a three-pointer to pull the Mocs back within seven, 55-48. Gamble drained two free throws with 22 seconds left and Elisaldez drove to the hoop for the layup in the Mocs final possession before Smith went 1-for-2 at the line securing the eight-point win.
