Women's Soccer Drops Opening Match Against Davidson

The UNC Greensboro (UNCG) women's soccer team fell ,2-1, in its season opener against Davidson College on Thursday, August 14 at UNCG Soccer Stadium.

Greensboro, N.C.- The UNC Greensboro (UNCG) women's soccer team fell ,2-1, in its season opener against Davidson College on Thursday, August 14 at UNCG Soccer Stadium. 
 

How it Happened: 
The Spartans were ambushed early as Davidson capitalized on a scramble inside of the box in the seventh minute for the early 1-0 deficit. After the first goal allowed, UNCG settled into the match and maintained a 69 percent possession rate of in the first half. This led to a chance for Ryen Ortiz with a near-miss deflected shot off the top of the crossbar that gave the Spartans life in the 28th minute. In the 37th minute, Davidson went on a counter-attack and added to its lead to make the score 2-0 before halftime. 

UNCG came out of the break with an offensive mindset, taking five shots in the first 10 minutes of action of the second half. The Spartan's pressure eventually paid off when, in the 73rd minute, a shot from outside the box by Mairead Gayer blew past the Davidson keeper to cut the lead down to 2-1. UNCG took another three shots after its goal, but comeback attempt was stifled by the stubborn Davidson defense to end the match at 2-1.

  • The Wildcats led the match in fouls, 6-3. 

  • The Spartans maintained a 64% possession total for the game.
