Mercer Edges Women’s Soccer, 1-0
MACON, GA. – The UNC Greensboro (UNCG) women's soccer team was handed a 1-0 loss against the Mercer Bears on Saturday night in The Southern Conference (SoCon) action at Betts Stadium in Macon, Georgia.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Mercer held the majority of possession in the first half, as the Bears outshot the Spartans 8-3. The Spartans' Emma Malone saw action early as Mercer tallied three shots in the first eight minutes of play, with two of them on net. One of the Bears' best chances of the night came in the 23rd minute, when Morganne Eikelbarner struck a low ball from the right channel that clipped the left post. UNCG's first shot of the game came in the 32nd minute by Ryen Ortiz, but it was blocked right inside the 18-yard box.
Both teams settled into play at the start of the second half, but it was Mercer that was able to connect passes in the 47th minute for a 1-0 advantage. Following a loose ball, the Bears made their way down the field in open space and Anna Bachman sent a cross from the right side to Eikelbarner who found the back of the net at 46:22. In the 69th minute, Ava Kiss made a move before slipping the ball across the 18-yard box to find Taylor Mentzer for a one-touch that went wide left. Play continued back and forth, but Mercer came away with the 1-0 victory.
