Women’s Soccer & Chattanooga Face Off on Sunday in Tennessee

GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNC Greensboro (UNCG) women's soccer team heads to face The Southern Conference (SoCon) foe Chattanooga on Sunday, Sept. 29 at Finley Stadium starting at 1:00 p.m., continuing league play after a week off.

SERIES HISTORY
UNCG leads the all-time series, 23-4-4, and won the last two matches. In Chattanooga, UNCG is 9-2-2 against the Mocs. Chattanooga's last win was on Oct. 2, 2022, 1-0, in Greensboro.
 
LAST TIME OUT FOR THE SPARTANS
UNCG and ETSU played to a 1-1 draw last Sunday afternoon in Greensboro. Freshman Azumi Oka scored the Spartans only goal of the game with seven seconds remaining in the game. Junior goalkeeper Emma Malone had the assist. The Spartans outshot the Bucs, 13-10. This was the first result for the Spartans against the Bucs since Oct. 27, 2019, when UNCG defeated ETSU 2-0 in Greensboro.
 
ABOUT THE SPARTANS

  • Kiss paces the team with six points scoring two goals and two assists this season.
  • Greulich and Taylor Mentzer have both scored two goals.
  • Morgan Brubaker, Herrera, Poplin and Oka have each chipped in one goal.
  • Along with Kiss, Mairead Gayer and Ryen Ortiz each have two helpers.
  • The Spartans have the edge over their opponents in shots on goal, 46-43, while foes have the advantage in corner kicks, 44-39.
  • UNCG had 25 shots against the Keydets and it was the first game since Sept. 7, 2023, when the Spartans had 20 or more shots. The Spartans had 20 shots against Coastal Carolina that day and won 3-0.
  • Among the SoCon, UNCG is third with 1.10 goals against average and .744 save percentage.
  • Malone was named the SoCon Defensive Player of the Week on Sept. 3. This was her first career weekly award.
  • This was the Spartans' first SoCon Player of the Week since Oct. 28, 2022, when Nadia Wilson earned the award and first SoCon Defensive Player of the Week since Sept. 27, 2022, when Abby Buchholz earned the recognition.
  • Head Coach Stefani Workman is in her first year at the helm of the Spartans and eighth year overall with the Blue & Gold.
  • The Spartans were voted to finish seventh in the 2024 SoCon Preseason Coaches' Poll.
  • The Spartans added six freshmen and one graduate transfer to the 2024 roster.

 
SCOUTING CHATTANOOGA

  • Chattanooga was voted to finish sixth in the 2024 SoCon Preseason Coaches Poll.
  • Clarissa Salinas was named to the Preseason All-Conference Team.
  • Among the SoCon, Chattanooga is fourth in goals against average (1.500).
  • The Mocs are coming off a 1-0 loss to Samford in Chattanooga last Sunday. They defeated Wofford 2-1 in their league opener.
  • Opponents are outshooting the Mocs, 117-106, while Chattanooga is outmatching foes in corner kicks, 35-33.
  • Carolina Richvalsky is leading the team with four goals and eight points.
  • Zoey Mize is pacing the Mocs with four assists.
  • Four other Mocs have chipped in one goal each.
  • Carolina Ekern has played every minute in net for Chattanooga averaging 1.5 goals against and has totaled 36 saves. She has one shutout in 10 games played, which came in a 1-0 victory over Jacksonville State.

UP NEXT
The Spartans will stay on the road and travel to Greenville, South Carolina, to face Furman on Thursday, Oct. 3 at 7:00 p.m. at Stone Stadium before returning home to host Wofford during UNCG's Homecoming Weekend on Sunday, Oct. 6 at 2:00 p.m.  

The Sunday contest against the Terriers will be UNCG's Senior Day and Faith and Family Day. All regular season home games are free admission.
