Softball Concludes Season With Tough Battle to Mercer

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The UNC Greensboro (UNCG) softball team, seeded second, fell to the fifh-seeded Mercer Bears, 7-3, on Friday afternoon at Hope Field in the 2025 Southern Conference (SoCon) Championship.

  • Mercer offense jumped on the board early with two runs on two hits and one error in the top of the first.
  • With a runner on first, Tori Hedgecock tripled for the first run and then Grace Jones reached on a throwing error to bring home Hedgecock from third, 2-0.
  • The Spartans were able to cut the deficit in half, 2-1, in the bottom of the second as Macy Michael doubled to center field to start the frame and advanced to third on a wild pitch.
  • Laney Deane drove the ball out to deep left field for a sacrifice fly, giving Michael time to score.
  • In the top of the fourth, KiKi Daniels crushed a two-run home run, extending the Bears' lead to three, 4-1.
  • UNCG kept Mercer from scoring in the top of the fifth and in the later half of the inning, Kaylyn Belfield singled to right field with one out before Jessie Shipley doubled to bring her home, 4-2.
  • Grace Loftin followed with a walk and thanks to an RBI single from Jorde Chartrand, the Spartans came within one, 4-3.
  • Mercer broke the game open in the top of the sixth, scoring three runs on four hits and one error for a 7-3 advantage. UNCG got out of the inning on a fielder's choice and a strikeout as the Bears stranded three on base.
  • Neither team was able to push anything across in the seventh, as both teams left one runner on base leaving the Bears with a 7-3 victory. 

NOTES

  • Belfield went 4-for-4 with one run scored.
  • Michael went 1-for-3 with one run scored.
  • Shipley, Chartrand and Deane collected one RBI each.

UNCG concluded the 2025 season 39-18 overall. This was the seventh-straight season with 30 or more wins (with the exception of the 2020 shortened season) and 10th time under the direction of Head Coach Janelle Breneman who has been at the helm for 13 seasons.
