Volleyball Drops Final Two Matches at Campbell Invitational

BUIES CREEK, N.C. – The UNC Greensboro (UNCG) volleyball team dropped its final two matches of the Campbell Invitational on Saturday to Gardner-Webb (24-26, 21-25, 21-25) and host school Campbell (22-25, 25-20, 24-26, 23-25) in Buies Creek, North Carolina, in Gore Arena.

BUIES CREEK, N.C. – The UNC Greensboro (UNCG) volleyball team dropped its final two matches of the Campbell Invitational on Saturday to Gardner-Webb (24-26, 21-25, 21-25) and host school Campbell (22-25, 25-20, 24-26, 23-25) in Buies Creek, North Carolina, in Gore Arena.

Match 1: UNCG 0 – Gardner-Webb 3

Set 1 – Gardner-Webb was able to gain an early 3-0 lead over the Spartans to control set one. UNCG sparked a little momentum late in the set, with the Runnin' Bulldogs on top, 23-20, a kill from Robin Rosser began four-straight Spartan points. However, Gardner-Webb responded with a 3-0 run to claim set one, 26-24.

Set 2 – The Spartans found their stride in the second frame, claiming a 12-7 advantage over Gardner-Webb. The Runnin' Bulldogs picked up the scoring later in the set. With UNCG in control 18-14, Gardner-Webb strung together a 6-1 run to take the lead and hold it for the rest of the game. Gardner-Webb secured set two, 25-21.
 
Set 3 – A kill from Siena Smiejek began a 4-1 lead for the Spartans to start the third stanza. UNCG maintained the lead in the set until both teams were tied at 21 apiece. Gardner-Webb notched four consecutive points to come away with the final game, 25-21, for the 3-0 win.

BY THE NUMBERS

Match 2: UNCG 1 – Campbell 3

Set 1 – Campbell put up the first point of the match, never allowing UNCG to lead in the frame despite a few tied scores. The Spartans made things interesting late in the set after coming back from a four-point deficit, 17-21, for a 5-2 run to make it a one-point game, 22-23. However, the Camels held on to take set one, 25-22.

Set 2 – UNCG picked up the momentum in the second set. A couple attack errors from Campbell granted UNCG with an early 2-0 lead, never allowing the Camels to lead in the set. With the Spartans on top 16-11, Campbell pieced together a 5-1 run to make it a one-point game, 16-17. However, kills from Sweet and Aylin Baran, following an attack error from Campbell, extended UNCG's lead back to four, 20-16. A kill from Sweet, followed by a Campbell attack error gave UNCG set two, 25-20, to tie the match at one set apiece.
 
Set 3 – The Spartans got out to an early 4-1 lead over the Camels to get set three started. UNCG held the lead until later with the team leading 12-10, Campbell recorded four-straight points to take a 14-12 lead. The remainder of the set would continue to remain close. However, with UNCG holding the 24-23 advantage, Campbell claimed the third game, 26-24, with three consecutive points to close it out.
 
Set 4 – The fourth and final set was a back-and-forth battle that saw a total of 15 ties and five lead changes. With Campbell in control, 22-19, UNCG recorded four unanswered points that was closed out by a service ace from Nussbaum for a 23-22 lead. The Camels quickly responded with three-straight points to claim the final game, 25-23, for the 3-1 win.

BY THE NUMBERS

  • UNCG bested Campbell in total blocks, 14-5.
  • Sweet registered her seventh career double-double and second of the season after leading the team with 18 kills and adding 10 digs.
  • Smiejek notched a career-best eight blocks.
  • Baran followed closely behind with 13 kills.
  • Rosser recorded a match-high 12 digs.
  • Seeds led the way as the setter with 38 assists.
  • Nussbaum led the match with 22 digs.

UP NEXT
The Spartans will stay on the road next week for the UNC Wilmington (UNCW) Invitational in Wilmington, North Carolina, from Sept. 12-13. UNCG will face Charlotte, UNCW and West Georgia over the two-day event in Hanover Hall.
