Three Spartans Record Double-Digit Kills as Volleyball Sweeps Western Carolina
GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNC Greensboro (UNCG) volleyball team secured a straight-set victory over the Western Carolina Catamounts (25-21, 25-18, 28-26) on Friday night in The Southern Conference (SoCon) in Fleming Gymnasium.
With tonight's win over the Catamounts, the Spartans improve to 9-2 at home, marking the best record in Fleming Gym since the 2021 season as that team went 9-2 overall at home that year.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Set 1 – Although the first set tied on three occasions, Western Carolina maintained the lead in the early goings of the match. However, with the Catamounts holding a 14-13 lead, a kill from McKenna Timmerman began a 4-0 Spartan run, making it 17-14 UNCG. The Blue & Gold were able to maintain the lead for the remainder of the first game. A setter dump kill from Gabby Seeds granted the Spartans with set one, 25-21.
Set 2 – The Spartans picked up right where they left off in the second set, getting things started with three unanswered points to hold the lead for the entirety of the second set. UNCG led by as much as seven on a few occasions in the second frame. A final kill from Allie Sweet secured the second set for UNCG, 25-18.
Set 3 – The third stanza was more of a back-and-forth battle seeing 14 ties and six lead changes throughout. With the Catamounts holding a 21-19 lead, UNCG recorded three consecutive points to take a 22-21 advantage. However, Western Carolina tied things right back up at 22-22, turning the remainder of the set into a point-for-point duel as both teams searched for two-straight points. A kill and service ace from Sweet secured the final set for the Spartans, 28-26, for the straight-set victory.
