Volleyball Returns Home to Take on Western Carolina & Chattanooga

GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNC Greensboro (UNCG) volleyball team returns home this week to continue The Southern Conference (SoCon) play by hosting Western Carolina on Friday at 6:00 p.m. and Chattanooga on Saturday at 5:00 p.m. in Fleming Gymnasium.

LAST TIME OUT FOR THE SPARTANS

  • UNCG dropped both its road SoCon matches last week with a 3-2 loss at Samford on Friday and a 3-1 loss at Furman on Saturday.
  • In the team's contest at Samford, Allie Sweet led the match with a new career-best of 32 kills, marking the first time in the 25-point set era a Spartan has secured more than 30 kills.
  • In addition, the last time a Spartan notched 32 kills in a match was on Sept. 29, 2007, when Branagan Fuller earned the feat against Furman.
  • Chloe Nussbaum stood out defensively for the Spartans last week, posting 48 digs and notching a 5.33 digs per set average.
  • Gabby Seeds led the Spartans with 80 assists for an 8.89 assists per set average and a .335 set percentage in nine sets. She recorded two double-doubles on the week, marking six this season.
     

ABOUT THE SPARTANS

  • The Spartans come into the weekend with a 12-9 overall record and 5-5 mark in the SoCon.
  • UNCG is currently sitting in fifth place in the SoCon standings.
  • The last time UNCG captured five SoCon wins was in the 2021 season as that squad went 12-4 in conference play.
  • UNCG stands out in the top-50 nationally in digs per set (32nd/15.95) and total digs (37th/1,356).
  • The squad is pacing the SoCon in digs per set (15.95), assists (1,006) and service aces (140).
  • Sweet is currently ranked in the top-25 nationally among six statistical categories: attacks per set (2nd/12.61), total attacks (3rd/1,072), points (9th/431.5), total kills (10th/377), points per set (18th/5.08) and kills per set (21st/4.44).
  • Sweet is leading the SoCon in attacks per set (12.61), kills per set (4.44), points (431.5), points per set (5.08), total attacks (1,072) and total kills (377).
  • Nussbaum stands out nationally at 21st in total digs (400) and 26th in digs per set (4.71).
  • Seeds is 64th in the country and second in the SoCon with a 9.56 assists per set average.
  • Seeds reached the 1,000-career assist milestone in the team's reverse sweep win over UNC Asheville on Sept. 20 in Greensboro.
  • The Spartans have collected five SoCon Player of the Week mentions this season: Seeds (Oct. 20), Siler-Nixon (Oct. 6), Sweet (Sept. 1 & Sept. 15) and Nussbaum (Sept. 1).
  • The 2025 squad features 10 returners and six newcomers. Out of the six newcomers, four are transfer students and two are freshmen.
  • UNCG was picked to finish the SoCon regular season in a tie for fifth place with Chattanooga.
  • Sweet was selected to the SoCon Preseason All-Conference Team.
  • Sweet's preseason nod comes after being named SoCon Freshman of the Year, while also being voted to the All-SoCon First Team and All-Freshman Team last season.

SCOUTING WESTERN CAROLINA

  • Western Carolina is currently in seventh place in the SoCon standings with a 3-7 league mark and 7-14 overall record.
  • The Catamounts went 1-1 last weekend with a 3-1 loss to Wofford on Thursday, but earning a sweep against The Citadel on Friday in Cullowhee.
  • The reigning SoCon Setter of the Week Katie Boney is pacing the league with a 10.35 assists per set average and 776 total assists this season.
  • Boney also paces the Catamounts with 23 service aces this season.
  • Eda Yalcinkaya and Courtney Graham stand out defensively with 305 digs and 89.0 total blocks, respectively.
  • Zoe Zudans is pacing the team on the outside with 199 kills.
  • Western Carolina was picked to finish ninth in the SoCon Preseason Coaches' Poll.

SERIES HISTORY VS WESTERN CAROLINA
Western Carolina paces the overall meetings with UNCG at 37-28. The Catamounts secured the two teams' matchup earlier this season, 3-1, in Cullowhee, North Carolina.

SCOUTING CHATTANOOGA

  • The Mocs head to Greensboro tied for second in the SoCon standings with Furman and Wofford with a 7-3 league record.
  • Chattanooga stands at 13-9 overall on the 2025 campaign.
  • The Mocs split their SoCon matches last weekend with a 3-1 win over Mercer on Wednesday and 3-1 loss to ETSU on Thursday in Chattanooga.
  • The team is pacing the SoCon with 1,357 digs, 140 service aces and 3,059 total attacks.
  • Sydney Jackwin is leading the league with 34 service aces. She is also the best hitter on the Mocs with 297 kills this season.
  • Caiti Barthel leads the conference with 401 digs.
  • Ashley Reynolds is the leading setter on the team with 528 assists.
  • Kynli Kirkendoll stands out defensively with 79.0 total blocks.
  • Chattanooga was picked to finish tied for fifth with UNCG in the SoCon Preseason Coaches' Poll.
  • Kirkendoll was named to the 2025 SoCon Preseason All-Conference Team.
  • The Mocs will face Wofford on Friday at 6:00 p.m. in Spartanburg, South Carolina, before coming to Greensboro on Saturday.

SERIES HISTORY VS CHATTANOOGA
The Mocs lead in the overall series against the Spartans at 34-24. UNCG took the earlier meeting this season in Chattanooga with a 3-1 victory over the Mocs on Oct. 3 in Maclellan Gym.
