Next Steps in Communications Integration

University Communications has begun bringing together key staff from other units. A new timeline lays out how and when departments will make changes. The post Next Steps in Communications Integration appeared first on UNC Greensboro.

In Fall 2024, UNC Greensboro announced the consolidation of communications positions across campus into the office of University Communications (UC). The move, informed by insights from the human resources consulting firm Segal and institutional analysis, will improve coordination, highlight our academic achievements more effectively, and create a stronger, more consistent University brand.

On May 30, UNCG hired its new vice chancellor for strategic communications, Diana Lawrence. Since coming on board, she has worked closely with Chancellor Gilliam, divisional leaders, and communications staff to coordinate a phased transition.

In June, UC offices moved closer to campus and are now located on the third floor at 1100 West Market Street.

“These organizational changes, as part of our new strategic plan, are designed to align our communications efforts, reduce duplication, and position us for more strategic, integrated, campus-wide communications,” said Gilliam. “Together, we’ll be able to tell the UNCG story with greater impact and clarity.”

Consolidation in Two Parts

Dec. 5 will see the next significant step in this process, when communications staff from the College of Arts and Sciences, School of Nursing, School of Education, Division of Research and Engagement, Weatherspoon Art Museum, and Jeanne Tannenbaum Center for Creative Practice begin the transition to UC.

On March 5, 2026, staff will move to UC from the College of Visual and Performing Arts, School of Health and Human Sciences, and Student Affairs.

Nearly all of these staff members will remain in their physical locations to maintain engagement with the academic programs and units they support.

Units that manage social media accounts, newsletters, and printed materials ad hoc will need to coordinate those activities with UC going forward. This will ensure that all messaging reflects the UNCG brand, voice, and priorities. UC staff will reach out with more information to support specific needs and offer professional guidance.

For now, the following units will maintain their own communications teams: Bryan School of Business and Economics, Athletics, Advancement, and Enrollment Management. They will continue to manage their own communications functions, but will work closely with UC, particularly around brand strategy, visual identity, messaging, media relations, and external engagement.
