The annual Empty Bowls Sale is Wednesday, October 1 from 10am-2pm in the EUC Auditorium Pre-function room! This annual sale raises funds for Spartan Open Pantry and features a variety of colorful bowls hand-painted by UNCG student volunteers this past spring. Bowls are priced at $5, $10, and $15. Use these bowls as candy dishes, catch-all bowls, holiday or birthday gifts for your favorite Spartans, or supply organizers on your desk. SOP staff will be on hand to take payment in cash or by card. The Spartan Open Pantry distributed over 60,000 lbs. of food last year to students, staff, and community members in need. Their website states, "from students who need a little help at the end of the month to homeless students and families who depend on the pantry for complete support, the SOP assists our neighbors who need a hand." You can find out more about SOP, their hours, and their work here.

This week’s topic: Colonial Echoes: The Effects of the Japanese Occupation of the Korean Peninsula from 1910-1945 on the Korean Identity and Language Presenter: Hannah Hook (Undergraduate Student); International and Global Studies, Asian Studies Target Audience: Campus-wide Bring your lunch and join us in-person or virtually! Hook will discuss her paper that examines the immediate and long-standing effects that the Imperial Japanese colonization of the Korean peninsula from 1910 to 1945 had on the Korean culture, identity, and language. This study conducted a qualitative analysis of primary sources, such as archival newspapers and recorded oral histories, to investigate the cultural and linguistic impacts of Imperial Japan’s colonial policies. Secondary sources used include scholarly journals which provided historical context and examined the enduring effects on Korean culture and identity. This paper will discuss how the Japanese Empire employed social control and forced assimilation in the Korean peninsula in order to fully suppress the Korean language and culture, particularly in the areas of education and the Korean language. Despite these attempts, the Korean language and its writing system, Hangeul, persisted as symbols of resistance that contributed to a strong sense of Korean nationalism and identity. This paper will also discuss the concept of Imperial Japanese racial theory as a justification for colonization and the foundation for the racial discrimination of Koreans. Key findings indicate that this racial discrimination and contradictory assimilation tactics created the social construct of intergenerational grief known as han, and that this concept of han was reclaimed and internalized by Koreans, profoundly impacting the Korean cultural and ethnic identity into modern day.
