To celebrate Banned Books Week this year, the University Libraries will be hosting a Read-a-Thon where we’ll read Looking for Alaska aloud in public. We’re looking for UNCG students, faculty, and staff to participate! Sign up to read a section (UNCG users only): Click here You don’t need to have read Looking for Alaska before to participate You don’t need to bring your own copy of the book (unless you just want to!) Each person will read approximately ten pages You are still welcome to join us for snacks and Banned Books Week swag even if you don’t want to sign up to read! Why are we doing this? Looking for Alaska has been on the American Library Association’s list of the Top 10 Most Challenged Books six times since 2012. Other books by the author, John Green, such as The Anthropocene Reviewed, are widely read in high schools. He, along with brother Hank Green, is known for his Crash Course YouTube channel and he is an advocate for global health equity and mental health. Book bans restrict access to new ideas and diverse perspectives. We believe that John Green’s popularity will help students form a connection to the issue of book banning in schools.
