The Minerva Statue, sculpted by Jim Barnhill (MFA 1982), was a gift of the Class of 1953 on their fiftieth anniversary. It is located on campus between Elliott University Center and College Avenue.
Statue of Minerva
Tribute to our start as a women's college and represents our strong academics.
This statue is Minerva, the Goddess of Wisdom. Spiro, the Spartan mascot, represents UNCG athletics while Minerva represents academics. Minerva is featured on the diploma and on the school seal.
More info
This statue is the site of one of UNCG's most popular school tradition. This tradition dictates that when students need good luck on an exam, they can take a bite from an apple and leave it here in hopes Minerva will grant them wisdom.
Right behind the statue is the campus swing set, a popular spot for students taking a break between classes.
