Baseball Wins Series Opener at Virginia Tech, 6-2
BLACKSBURG, Va. – The UNC Greensboro (UNCG) baseball team earned a win in its first road test of the 2025 campaign, defeating the Virginia Tech Hokies, 6-2, on Saturday afternoon at English Field at Atlantic Union Bank Park.
The Spartans got another solid outing on hill from senior right-handed pitcher Sam Murchison, who is now 2-0 on the young season. The Siler City, North Carolina, native pitched seven complete innings with six hits and two runs allowed while walking four and striking out five. In relief, sophomore Mayson Dear earned his first collegiate save in his second career appearance. He struck out a pair in two innings of work.
Virginia Tech scored the game's first run when Sam Tackett launched a towering solo home run over the fence in left.
Then in the fourth, both sides traded a run with Brantley Truitt singling to left to score Parker Wight before the Hokies answered with Treyson Hughes' knock up the middle that scored Jared Davis. After four innings in Blacksburg, the Hokies were leading, 2-1.
The Spartans grabbed their first lead of the day in the fifth inning. What was eventually a three-run and two-hit inning began with Jacob Budzik doubling to left-center. Budzik then scored on a fielding error, which was followed up by a Virginia Tech pitching change. After Wight was hit by a pitch in the next at-bat, Luke Holland doubled to left to score Jeremy Wolf. Malachi Gales then chopped the ball back to the pitcher, but Wight was able to score from third on the play, avoiding the catcher's tag at the plate after the pitcher flipped an under-hand throw home.
UNCG's Case Kermode made it a four-run lead in the top half of the ninth, singling through the right side with the bases loaded to score Walsh and Wight, which sealed the eventual 6-2 victory.
