Baseball Hits Two Homers in 6-4 Setback Against New Mexico State
GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNC Greensboro (UNCG) baseball team fell 6-4 while hosting the New Mexico State (NMSU) Aggies in non-conference action on Wednesday afternoon at UNCG Baseball Stadium.
The Aggies and Spartans traded runs in the second inning to open the scoring. NMSU struck first in the top of the inning when Aidan Lombardi crossed the plate on a throwing error in the infield. UNCG tied the game, 1-1, during the bottom half with Luke Holland scoring from third on a groundout to short by Jacob Budzik.
NMSU pushed its lead out 3-1 and then 6-1 with two runs in the fourth before adding three more in the fifth. The first pair of runs scored on a fielder's choice putout at second before a single by Tariq Freeny, which scored Tommy Meluskey. In the fifth inning, the Aggies tacked on three more runs with an RBI single to right by Bryce Campbell, a fielder's choice RBI batted to third by Sheehan O'Connor and another RBI single hit out to right-center by Aidan Lombardi.
The Spartans cut the deficit to four, 6-2, when JJ Parsons hit his first collegiate home run over the wall in left during the seventh inning.
UNCG scored two more runs in the eighth to close the gap to 6-4 with Jacob Dilley pulling his fourth hit of the day down the left-field line for a solo home run and Brantley Truitt hitting a triple to center to score Holland from first.
Steve Solorzano transitioned from playing first base to pitching for the Aggies to begin the bottom of the ninth. He proceeded to shut the door and secured the 6-4 victory for NMSU after allowing a leadoff hit to Budzik.
NOTES:
- Dilley went 4-for-4 on the day and hit his second HR of the season.
- Holland led the team with two runs scored and three walks.
- The Spartans had the edge in extra-base hits, 3-1.
- Both sides left six runners on base.
- Jake Colucci, Danny Thompson Jr. and Mayson Dear combined to pitch the final four shutout innings in relief with just two hits against and four strikeouts.
