Baseball Falls 3-1 in Series Opener Against UConn
GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNC Greensboro (UNCG) baseball team was defeated 3-1 in a non-conference series opener by the UConn Huskies on Friday evening at UNCG Baseball Stadium.
Luke Holland got the Spartans on the board in a hurry during the bottom of the first inning by hitting his third home run of the season, a leadoff blast over the wall in left-center to make it 1-0.
The Huskies answered in the top of the third inning. After Anthony Belisario doubled off the wall in right-center, he scored on a single blooped into left by Beau Root. After three innings in Greensboro, the game was tied at one.
UConn secured its first lead of the evening during the fourth frame, 2-1. With Bryan Padilla batting a ball to second, Caleb Shpur advanced to third before running home to score after an errant throw over to first.
The Huskies scored their third and final run of the game in the top of the eighth inning. Tyler Minick was the one to bat in the insurance run when his single to center allowed Root to score from second, which capped the scoring at 3-1.
Brady Afthim entered the game in the ninth to pitch for the Huskies and closed the door with a 1-2-3 inning for his third save of the season, which secured the 3-1 victory for UConn.
