Baseball Falls in Series Finale at Samford
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The UNC Greensboro (UNCG) baseball team fell 12-4 to the Samford Bulldogs in the finale of a three-game weekend series in The Southern Conference (SoCon) on Sunday at Joe Lee Griffin Field.
The Bulldogs grabbed the game's first run in the opening inning. After Cade Carr reached on a fielder's choice, Jake Souders doubled to left-center to score Carr from first and make it 1-0.
UNCG grabbed the lead in the top half of the second inning when Tyler Steele singled into center, scoring Luke Jenkins and Jacob Dilley to make it 2-1 Spartans. Samford quickly evened the score, 2-2, with Michael Gupton hitting a solo home run to center in the bottom of the second.
An RBI double to left-center and two UNCG throwing errors led to three runs scoring for Samford to take a 5-2 lead in the fifth frame.
Another run crossed the plate for Samford to make it 6-2 in the sixth inning when Angelo Prieto singled through the left side to score Gupton from third.
Steele cut the deficit for the Spartans to three, 6-3, with a no-doubt solo home run off the scoreboard in left to start the seventh inning. Samford countered with four more runs on four hits. Gupton had the big one, a three-run homer to left. After seven innings, the Bulldogs led the Spartans, 10-3.
After Pitts pushed two more runs across with a double deep to center in the eighth, UNCG rallied for one run when Dilley doubled and later scored on an RBI single to right by Luke Holland. However, it was all the Spartans could manage before falling to the Bulldogs, 12-4.
