Baseball Concludes Regular Season Hosting Longwood and Western Carolina

GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNC Greensboro (UNCG) baseball team is set to host a non-conference game against Longwood on Tuesday before wrapping up the regular season with Western Carolina in The Southern Conference (SoCon) action from Thursday to Saturday.

GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNC Greensboro (UNCG) baseball team is set to host a non-conference game against Longwood on Tuesday before wrapping up the regular season with Western Carolina in The Southern Conference (SoCon) action from Thursday to Saturday.

After facing Longwood (11-37, 5-16 Big South) on Tuesday at 6:00 p.m., the Spartans will host Western Carolina (26-25, 8-10 SoCon) from Thursday to Saturday at UNCG Baseball Stadium. Game times for the series are scheduled for 6:00 p.m. on Thursday and Friday prior to the finale at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday.

Friday night's game will feature a Senior Day ceremony prior to first pitch, where the Spartans will recognize its 10 seniors.

All regular season baseball home games are free admission. The concessions at UNCG Baseball Stadium are open. Bringing in outside food is not permitted and pets are not allowed into the stadium.

LAST WEEK FOR THE SPARTANS

  • UNCG was swept in a SoCon weekend series at Samford. The Spartans lost 14-2 in seven innings and 12-2 in seven innings during a doubleheader on Friday before falling 12-4 in the finale.
  • JJ Parsons hit his fourth home run of the season in the series opener.
  • Tyler Steele posted two hits, including a three-run home run in the series finale. Steele's homer was his third of the season.
  • Danny Thompson Jr. pitched four innings in game two on Friday and struck out eight.
  • Noah Chapman pitched five complete innings on Sunday and retired five on strikes.
  • Jacob Budzik, Jacob Dilley and Parker Wight each had one double in the series.
  • Jeremy Wolf led the team with three walks in the series.

SCOUTING UNCG

  • The Spartans own an overall record of 19-30 with an 8-10 mark in the SoCon. They stand in a tie for fifth in the league with Western Carolina at a .444 conference winning percentage.
  • The Spartans stand at 53rd in sacrifice bunts (29), 57th in strikeout-to-walk-ratio (2.25) and 58th in walks allowed per nine innings (3.99).
  • A threat to steal, UNCG also ranks 82nd nationally in stolen bases (77) and 83rd in stolen bases per game (1.57).
  • The Spartans' pitching staff stands at 71st in the country by averaging 9.0 strikeouts per nine innings.
  • Thompson Jr. leads the Spartans with 70 strikeouts this season, which ranks 76th in NCAA Division I.
  • Thompson Jr. is also seventh nationally, averaging 13.32 strikeouts per nine innings and leads UNCG with four saves this season.
  • Sam Murchison is second for UNCG with 69 strikeouts, which stands at 98th nationally.
  • Chapman and Jay Miller are tied for third on the team with 69 strikeouts so far this season.
  • Chapman ranks 35th in NCAA Division I with a 4.93 strikeout-to-walk ratio.
  • The Spartans set a new season-high for single-game hits and runs two weeks ago while facing The Citadel on May 4 with 18 runs on 20 hits.
  • When scoring 10 or more runs this season, UNCG is 5-1.
  • Wolf leads the Spartans with a .309 (55-for-178) batting average and leads the Spartans with 16 doubles and 35 runs scored. He also leads the team in extra-base hits (21) and total bases (84).
  • Wight leads UNCG with eight home runs and 25 RBI.
  • Luke Holland is tied for second on the team with Dilley at five home runs.
  • UNCG is 52nd in the country with three shutouts this season.
  • UNCG faced four consecutive Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) opponents earlier in the season, amounting to eight-straight games from Feb. 18-March 4. The Spartans went 3-5 during the stretch.
  • The Spartans opened the eight-straight games against ACC foes with an upset over then-No. 13 Wake Forest at home, 4-0, on Feb. 18.
  • The Spartans were voted to finish first in the 2025 SoCon Preseason Coaches' Poll.
  • Senior right-handed pitcher Rob Ready was named one of two SoCon Preseason Pitchers of the Year by the league. The other was Michael Harpster of ETSU.
  • In addition, a total of six Spartans were recognized on Preseason All-SoCon Teams. They were Ready (SP), Trey Truitt (DH), Holland (OF) and Grant Aycock (RP), who were named to the first team, while Hunter Shuey (SP) and Thompson Jr. (RP) rounded out the list on the second team.
  • Chapman is back as well after being named to the SoCon All-Freshman Team in 2024.
  • The Spartans are coming off a historic season where they posted an overall record of 33-21, marking their 19th 30-win campaign in the program's 34-season history.
  • UNCG captured its third SoCon Regular Season Championship behind a conference record of 15-6 in 2024.
  • Entering the SoCon Tournament as the top seed for the first time since 2018, UNCG ended the 2024 campaign with losses to Wofford, 5-2, and ETSU, 10-7, at Fluor Field in Greenville, South Carolina.
  • UNCG led the SoCon a season ago in ERA (5.19), fewest runs allowed (297) and lowest opponent batting average (.267).
  • The Spartans' baseball roster is made up of 38 student-athletes, including 23 returners, eight newcomers and seven transfers.

SCOUTING THE LANCERS

  • Longwood owns an overall record of 11-37 with a 5-16 mark in Big South games for a tie of last in the nine-team league.
  • The Lancers head to Greensboro following a week off after dropping two out of three games against USC Upstate in Spartanburg, South Carolina, from May 2-4.
  • The Lancers won 7-6 over the Spartans in game one before falling 22-11 and 14-4 in eight innings.
  • Myles Webb is the only Lancer to compete in all 48 games for Longwood this season. He leads the team, batting .309 (56-for-181) with a team-high 45 RBI and 96 total bases.
  • Tré Keels has only missed one game this season and leads the team with eight home runs.
  • Guillermo Garcia Jr. leads the Lancers for innings pitched (64.1) and strikeouts (63).
  • Longwood was voted to finish last in the 2025 Big South Preseason Poll.
  • The Lancers finished the 2024 campaign at 23-29 overall with a 10-14 league record for a tie of fifth in the Big South.
  • Longwood Head Coach Ray Noe is in his first season at the helm of the Lancers' baseball program after previously coaching in different roles at VMI from 2019-24.

SERIES HISTORY VS. LONGWOOD
UNCG and Longwood have only met one other time in 2022 for a three-game series. After falling 6-5 in the opener at UNCG Baseball Stadium, the Spartans took the series with 4-3 and 17-2 (7 innings) victories in Greensboro.

SCOUTING THE CATAMOUNTS

  • Western Carolina stands at 26-25 overall and is tied with UNCG in the SoCon with an 8-10 record in league games.
  • The Catamounts took two out of three games while hosting The Citadel over the weekend in Cullowhee, North Carolina.
  • Western Carolina won 11-4 in game one and 15-2 in seven innings in game two before falling 9-7 in the final game.
  • Jack Spyke is leading the Catamounts with a .346 (54-for-156) batting average and 17 doubles.
  • Trent Turner has played in all 51 games and is batting .332 (68-for-205) with a team-leading 12 home runs and 50 RBI.
  • Davis Wright and Dusty Revis lead the Catamounts in innings pitched with 72.1 and 71.1 innings, respectively.
  • Wright leads the team with 74 strikeouts with just 22 walks allowed.
  • Revis has a team-low 4.16 ERA and is limiting opposing hitters to just a .229 batting average.
  • The Catamounts posted a 28-26 overall record last season with a 13-8 record in league games for fourth in the SoCon.
  • Western Carolina was voted to finish sixth in the 2025 SoCon Baseball Preseason Poll.
  • Revis was recognized on the All-SoCon Preseason First Team as a starting pitcher.

SERIES HISTORY VS. WESTERN CAROLINA
The Spartans are 49-39 in the all-time series against the Catamounts dating back to the first meeting on April 2, 1992.

Last season's series, which was held in Cullowhee, saw the Spartans prevail by winning the first two games. UNCG won 15-11 on April 12 and 13 before falling 7-6 in 10 innings on April 14, 2024.
