Baseball Falls 6-4 in Series Finale Against UConn
GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNC Greensboro (UNCG) baseball team fell, 6-4, in the finale of a three-game weekend series against the UConn Huskies in non-conference action on Sunday afternoon at UNCG Baseball Stadium.
The Spartans scored three runs in the bottom of the first inning for the game's first lead. Luke Holland drove in the first run by lining a single into left to score Jeremy Wolf from second. Holland later scored on an inside-the-park home run hit down the line and into the right-field corner by Case Kermode.
Wolf extended the Spartans' lead to 4-0 in the third when he scored from third on a wild pitch after reaching via a walk to leadoff the inning.
The Huskies plated their first run during the fifth inning. After Aidan Dougherty reached with a one-out walk, he advanced on a balk before moving over to third on a single by Matt Garbowski. He then scored on an RBI groundout by Caleb Shpur to the middle infielders.
UConn scored another run in the top of the sixth inning when Tyler Minick doubled down the third-base line, allowing Beau Root to score from first, which cut the Spartans' lead to two, 4-2
The Huskies scored four more runs in the top of the seventh to claim their first lead of the afternoon, 6-4. Dougherty reached on a fielding error to get the inning started and then scored in the next at-bat when Gabriel Tirado roped a pinch-hit double into the right-center gap. Pinch running for Tirado, Ryan Daniels as well as Shpur scored to give the Huskies a 5-4 lead on an infield single that was chopped over the shortstop's head and into shallow left-center by Sam Biller.
UNCG rallied in an attempt to even the score with runners on the corners in the ninth, but Huskies' reliever Greg Shaw III completed a two-inning save with a fly out to left to seal the 6-4 victory and series sweep for UConn.
NOTES:
- Wolf led the team with three hits and two runs scored.
- Kermode drove in the other two runs with an inside-the-park home run in the first inning. It was his first home run as a Spartan.
- Grant Aycock and Danny Thompson Jr. pitched for the Spartans and combined for nine strikeouts.
- Aycock's line: 6.0 IP, 6 H, 2 R, 2 BB & 5 K
- Thompson Jr.'s line: 3.0 IP, 5 H, 3 R, 1 BB & 4 K
- Both teams left seven runners on base.
- UNCG had the edge in double plays turned, 2-1.
