Miller Named SoCon Pitcher of the Week to Begin Season

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – UNC Greensboro (UNCG) baseball's junior right-handed pitcher Jay Miller has been named The Southern Conference (SoCon) Baseball Pitcher of the Week, the conference announced Monday.

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – UNC Greensboro (UNCG) baseball's junior right-handed pitcher Jay Miller has been named The Southern Conference (SoCon) Baseball Pitcher of the Week, the conference announced Monday.

The Corner Brook, NL, Canada, native started in the second game of a doubleheader to begin the season on Friday night against the Creighton Bluejays at UNCG Baseball Stadium. Miller was brilliant on the mound, pitching seven complete innings with just two hits and no runs surrendered. He also retired nine of the 25 batters he faced on strikes while only issuing three walks. The Spartans went on to win the ballgame, 3-0.

"The guys made plays behind me," Miller said. "My mindset from the start was to just outlast the other team's starting pitcher and give our offense a chance to take the lead."

The weekly award marks UNCG baseball's first of the season. The Spartans totaled five conference player/pitcher of the week honors last season. Former Spartan Julien Peissel, who was named the SoCon Pitcher of the Week on May 20, 2024, was the last student-athlete from the UNCG baseball team to earn the recognition.
