Baseball Drops Finale After Winning Weekend Series at VMI
LEXINGTON, Va. – The UNC Greensboro (UNCG) baseball team fell 8-6 in a three-game weekend series finale against the Virginia Military Institute (VMI) Keydets in The Southern Conference (SoCon) action on Sunday afternoon at Lamore Field at Gray-Minor Stadium.
Despite falling the finale, the Spartans, who are now 12-15 (2-1 SoCon), won the series at VMI two games to one after prevailing 9-7 on Friday and 13-12 on Saturday.
UNCG grabbed the game's first lead on Sunday in the second inning. After Jose Perez drew a walk and Tyler Steele singled to left-center, JJ Parsons lifted a three-run homer over the wall in left to make it 3-0 Spartans.
Parker Wight made it 4-0 with his third home run of the series, a solo shot sent out to right during the top of the third inning. VMI countered with Owen Prince scoring on a delayed double steal after the ball was throw down to second attempting to catch Cole Raile heading to second. Bradley Garner then singled up the middle to score Raile, which cut UNCG's lead to 4-2 after three innings of play.
The fourth frame saw Tyler Steele send the Spartans' third home run of the afternoon out to left-center to score two runs, which made it 6-2 UNCG. The Keydets answered with Prince hitting a single through the right side to score Kazuya Jordan, shrinking UNCG's lead to 6-3.
Boston Torres tied the game, 6-6, by hitting a three-run home run for the Keydets in the bottom of the fifth inning.
The Keydets then claimed their first lead in the bottom of the sixth inning and never looked back once Garner one-hopped a double off the wall in right, allowing Prince to score from second and make it 7-6 VMI.
