Baseball Falls in Second Game of Series at Mercer
MACON, Ga. – The UNC Greensboro (UNCG) baseball team dropped a 9-1 contest to the Mercer Bears in the second game of three in a weekend series of The Southern Conference (SoCon) action on Saturday afternoon at OrthoGeorgia Park.
Mercer grabbed the game's first run in the second inning after Zack Thompson walked with one out and later scored on a wild pitch to make it 1-0. Eli Stephens then singled to right with one out to score Parker Lester from third. In the next at-bat, Ely Brown bunted a single back to the pitcher, which scored Titan Kamaka and made it 3-0.
The Bears tacked on two runs in the fourth and fifth innings to extend their lead to 7-0. Ty Dalley singled to first base in the fourth inning to make it 4-0 when Kamaka scored thanks to a throwing error by the first baseman. Brown then scored on a wild pitch later in the inning to make it 5-0. Dalley added a pair to the lead with one swing during the bottom of the fifth when he hit a two-run home run to left, making it 7-0 Mercer.
UNCG got on the board with one run in the top of the seventh inning. After Parker Wight reached base with a one-out single to left, Luke Jenkins had a base knock to right to advance Wight to third with two outs. After JJ Parsons drew a walk to load the bases, Tyler Steele singled to short to score Wight from third and cut the deficit to 7-1.
Mercer quickly answered with two more runs to cap the scoring for the game at 9-1 in the bottom of the seventh inning. Brant Baughcum and Bradley Frye each had an RBI single to score the runs.
