Men’s Basketball & Va. Univ. of Lynchburg Face Off on Saturday at Fleming Gym

GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNC Greensboro (UNCG) men's basketball team returns after the holiday break to host Virginia University of Lynchburg (VUL) on Saturday at 4:00 p.m. at Fleming Gymnasium.

GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNC Greensboro (UNCG) men's basketball team returns after the holiday break to host Virginia University of Lynchburg (VUL) on Saturday at 4:00 p.m. at Fleming Gymnasium.  
 
The Spartans are 6-6 overall and the Dragons are 0-19 overall. This is the second meeting between the two teams. UNCG won 135-57 on Dec. 21, 2023, at Fleming Gymnasium when the Spartans broke six school records.  
 

 
 
LAST TIME OUT FOR THE SPARTANS

  • UNCG fell to Piedmont Triad foe Elon on Saturday, 73-69.  
  • Kenyon Giles paced the Spartans with 24 points and Ronald Polite III had 17 points.
  • This was Giles' 11th game this season scoring double figures.
  • Polite III had three steals.
  • Miles Jones led the Spartans with four assists and five rebounds.
  • UNCG had the advantage in field goal percentage, 46.4-38.3, three-point percentage, 41.7-17.4 and free throw percentage, 77.8-69.7.
  • Elon led in points in the paint, 36-28, second-chance points, 24-5 and fastbreak points, 8-4.

SCOUTING THE SPARTANS

  • Three Spartans are averaging double figures, including Giles (16.7), Atwell (12.9) and Polite III (12.6).
  • Jalen Breath and Jones are pacing the team with 6.8 and 5.8 rebounds per game, respectively.
  • The Spartans are nationally ranked eighth in three-point percentage defense (27.2), 31st in field goal percentage defense (38.8), 35th in scoring defense (64.3), 66th in three-pointers per game (9.3) and 67th in three-point percentage (36.7).
  • The Spartans are leading The Southern Conference (SoCon) in field goal percentage defense.
  • UNCG is second in the SoCon in scoring defense, three-point percentage defense and least number of turnovers per game (11.1).
  • Giles is ranked 47th nationally in three-point percentage (43.4) and three-pointers per game (3.00), as well as 55th in total three-point field goals made (36).
  • Atwell is ranked nationally in three-pointers per game (47th/3.00), total three-point field goals made (55th/36) and three-point attempts (57th/93).
  • UNCG has the advantage against its foes in points per game, 71.8-64.3, three-pointers per game, 9.3-5.9, rebounds per game, 37.8-35.5, assists per game, 14.3-11.7, steals per game, 6.8-5.9.
  • Giles joins the Spartans after two years at Radford, where he was first on the team with 1.4 steals per game and second on the team with 14.3 points per game.
  • Polite III and Malik Henry both come to UNCG with four years previously at George Mason. Polite III has averaged 7.38 points per game and 2.5 assists per game. Henry contributed a 62.5-percentage in field goals during his time with the Patriots.
  • Demetrius Davis joins the Spartans after playing the last two seasons at Chattanooga and one year each at Lawson State Community College and Augusta.
  • UNCG concluded last season 21-11 overall and 12-6 in The Southern Conference (SoCon) and it was the seventh year out of eight with 20 or more wins for the Spartans.
  • The Spartans were voted to finish sixth in the 2024-25 SoCon Preseason Coaches' Poll and Atwell was voted to the 2024-25 Preseason All-SoCon team.
  • The Spartans return nine from last year's roster, while adding seven newcomers.

 
SCOUTING VIRGINIA UNIVERSITY OF LYNCHBURG

  • The Dragons are 0-19 overall this season.  
  • VUL most recently lost to Radford 122-63.
  • Jacob Newman and Curtis Holton led the game with 22 and 20 points, respectively.
  • As a team, the Dragons are averaging 60.8 points per game.
  • Le'nijel Robinson, who has played in 10 games, is averaging 24.16 points per game.
  • Jacob Newman is second on the team with 16.66 points per game in 10 games played.
  • Terrence Johnson (15.72) and Jerome Mitchell (12.67) round out the Dragons who are averaging double figures.
  • Johnson is averaging 6.56 rebounds per game and Robinson is second on the team with 6.16 boards per game.
