Men’s Basketball Travels to The Citadel, Hosts Western Carolina This Week
GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNC Greensboro (UNCG) men's basketball team hits the road to face The Citadel in the second matchup of the regular season for a Wednesday night battle with a tipoff of 7:00 p.m. at McAlister Fieldhouse.
The Spartans will then host Western Carolina on Saturday at the First Horizon Coliseum with a start time of 4:00 p.m.
UNCG is 14-9 overall this season with a 7-3 SoCon mark. The Citadel is coming into the Wednesday night's contest with a 5-16 overall mark and a 0-10 league record. Western Carolina will travel to Furman before visiting Greensboro and the Catamounts are currently 6-15 overall and 2-8 in SoCon action.
LAST TIME OUT FOR THE SPARTANS
- UNCG split its SoCon games last week, defeating ETSU, 70-65, but falling to Wofford, 74-62.
- Against Wofford, Jalen Breath tallied his fourth double-double of the season and sixth career with 10 points and 17 rebounds.
- His 17 boards are a career best.
- Ronald Polite III paced the Spartans with 18 points and three shots made from behind the arc.
- Donovan Atwell chipped in 10 points, while Malik Henry registered seven rebounds.
- The Spartans dominated the boards with a 39-33 edge overall and 16-9 advantage on the offensive end.
- Wofford had the upper hand in field goal percentage (42.6-38.9), three-point percentage (63.2-30.4) and free throw percentage (80-56.3).
SCOUTING THE SPARTANS
- Three Spartans are averaging double figures, including Kenyon Giles (16.2), Atwell (14.1) and Polite III (13.1).
- Breath (6.5), Henry (4.5) and Miles Jones (4.3) are pacing the team in rebounds per game.
- The Spartans are in the top 50 nationally in six categories, including three-point percentage defense (16th/29.3), three-point percentage (20th/38.3), scoring defense (24th/64.9), field goal percentage defense (24th/39.9), three-pointers per game (33rd/9.8) and turnovers forced per game (45th/10.4).
- The Spartans are leading the SoCon in field goal percentage defense, scoring defense, three-point percentage, three-point percentage defense and turnovers per game.
- Nationally, Atwell is ranked in the top 50 in total three-point field goals made (6th/75), three-pointers per game (14th/3.26), three-point percentage (21st/43.4) and three-point attempts (28th/173).
- Atwell is leading the conference in all four categories.
- UNCG has the advantage against its foes in points per game, 73.4-64.9, three-pointers per game, 9.8-6.7, rebounds per game, 37.2-33.9, and assists per game, 13.3-10.9.
- Giles joined the Spartans after two years at Radford, where he was first on the team with 1.4 steals per game and second on the team with 14.3 points per game.
- Polite III and Henry both came to UNCG with four years previously at George Mason. Polite III has averaged 7.38 points per game and 2.5 assists per game. Henry contributed a 62.5-percentage in field goals during his time with the Patriots.
- Demetrius Davis joined the Spartans after playing the last two seasons at Chattanooga and one year each at Lawson State Community College and Augusta.
- UNCG concluded last season 21-11 overall and 12-6 in SoCon and it was the seventh year out of eight with 20 or more wins for the Spartans.
- The Spartans were voted to finish sixth in the 2024-25 SoCon Preseason Coaches' Poll and Atwell was voted to the 2024-25 Preseason All-SoCon team.
- The Spartans returned nine from last year's roster and added seven newcomers.

- The Catamounts most recently lost to VMI, 80-76, in overtime.
- Western Carolina will visit Furman on Wednesday before coming to Greensboro.
- WCU has lost the last five of six games.
- Opponents are outscoring the Catamounts, 78.6-68.2.
- The Catamounts are outrebounding their foes, 38.2-37.9.
- Bernard Pelote is leading the team with 14.1 points per game and Cord Stansberry is second averaging 11.8 points per game.
