Men’s Basketball Reaches Century Mark with 105-50 Win Over VUL
GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNC Greensboro (UNCG) men's basketball team concluded its 2024 non-conference slate with a 105-50 victory against Virginia University of Lynchburg (VUL) on Saturday evening at Fleming Gymnasium.
This was the first game this season that the Spartans have scored 100 or more points and first game with 100 or more points since Feb. 28, 2024, when UNCG defeated VMI at home, 100-58.
Five Spartans tallied double digits in the win, including Donovan Atwell with 21 points. Ronald Polite III and Kenyon Giles were second for UNCG with 12 points each, while Malik Henry and Muon Reath registered 10 points each.
Atwell went 5-for-10 from behind the arc for the most three-pointers in the game.
Henry, Reath and Demetrius Davis each had seven rebounds to lead the Spartans, while Atwell and Domas Kauzonas each registered six boards. Reath and Davis also tallied two blocks each.
Polite III paced the game with seven assists, as Giles and Jones each had four dimes.
UNCG went 38-for-74 from field goal range for its fourth time this season with a .500 or better percentage from the field. The Spartans 15 three-pointers against the Dragons is the most this season and most since the VMI game when UNCG drained 16.
The Spartans 17 offensive rebounds are the most this season, while the 39 defensive rebounds are the second most. UNCG outrebounded VUL 56-29 and the 56 total boards is the highest this season. This is the most in a game since the victory over VUL on Dec. 21, 2023.
As a team, the Spartans had season highs in blocks (6) and assists (29). The six blocks are the most since Feb. 4, 2024, when UNCG had six in an 89-87 victory over Furman. The 29 dimes are the most since UNCG's 32 against the Dragons on Dec. 21, 2023.
UNCG outmatched VUL in field goal percentage (51.4-30.3), three-point percentage (39.5-8.3) and free throw percentage (73.7-64.3).
The Spartans held the advantage in points in the paint (44-26), points off turnovers (12-4), second chance points (18-6), fastbreak points (26-2) and bench points (41-0).
According to UNCG records, the 55-point win is the fifth largest margin of victory in program history and third most in Division I history. With 31 seconds left in the game, the Spartans had a 56-point lead which is now the largest advantage in a game this season. It is the largest since the VUL victory last season.
