Men’s Basketball Opens the New Year Against Wofford on CBS Sports Network

GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNC Greensboro (UNCG) men's basketball team and Wofford open The Southern Conference (SoCon) slate with a game on New Year's Day in Spartanburg, South Carolina, at the Jerry Richardson Indoor Stadium with a game time of noon on the CBS Sports Network.

GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNC Greensboro (UNCG) men's basketball team and Wofford open The Southern Conference (SoCon) slate with a game on New Year's Day in Spartanburg, South Carolina, at the Jerry Richardson Indoor Stadium with a game time of noon on the CBS Sports Network.
 
The Spartans are 7-6 overall and the Terriers are 6-7 overall. Wofford has the advantage in the overall series, 32-23. UNCG has won the last six regular season contests against Wofford. Wofford last won on March 4, 2023, in the SoCon Tournament, 67-66.
 

 
 
LAST TIME OUT FOR THE SPARTANS

  • UNCG reached the century mark for the first time this season with a 105-50 victory over Virginia University of Lynchburg on Saturday at Fleming Gym.
  • Five Spartans tallied double digits in the win, including Donovan Atwell with 21 points.
  • Ronald Polite III and Kenyon Giles were second for UNCG with 12 points each, while Malik Henry and Muon Reath registered 10 points each.
  • Atwell went 5-for-10 from behind the arc for the most three-pointers in the game.
  • As a team, the Spartans had season highs in blocks (6), assists (29) and three-pointers (15).
  • According to UNCG records, the 55-point win is the fifth largest margin of victory in program history and third most in Division I history. With 31 seconds left in the game, the Spartans had a 56-point lead which is now the largest advantage in a game this season. It is the largest since the VUL victory last season.

SCOUTING THE SPARTANS

  • Three Spartans are averaging double figures, including Giles (16.3), Atwell (13.5) and Polite III (12.6).
  • Jalen Breath and Miles Jones are pacing the team with 6.6 and 5.6 rebounds per game, respectively.
  • The Spartans are in the top 50 nationally in four categories, including fifth in three-point percentage defense (26.4), 17th in field goal percentage defense (38.1), 24th in scoring defense (63.2) and 41st in three-pointers per game (9.8).
  • The Spartans are leading The Southern Conference (SoCon) in field goal percentage defense, scoring defense and least turnovers per game (10.7).
  • UNCG is second in the SoCon in three-point percentage defense, rebounds per game (39.23), three-point percentage (37.0) and scoring margin (11.2).
  • Giles is ranked 33rd nationally in total three-point field goals made (40), 41st in three-point percentage (43.5) and 46th in three-pointers per game (3.08).  
  • Atwell is ranked nationally in total three-point field goals made (29th/41), three-point attempts (36th/103) and three-pointers per game (41st/3.15).
  • UNCG has the advantage against its foes in points per game, 74.4-63.2, three-pointers per game, 9.8-5.5, rebounds per game, 39.2-35.0, assists per game, 15.4-11.1, steals per game, 6.5-5.9.
  • Giles joins the Spartans after two years at Radford, where he was first on the team with 1.4 steals per game and second on the team with 14.3 points per game.
  • Polite III and Malik Henry both come to UNCG with four years previously at George Mason. Polite III has averaged 7.38 points per game and 2.5 assists per game. Henry contributed a 62.5-percentage in field goals during his time with the Patriots.
  • Demetrius Davis joins the Spartans after playing the last two seasons at Chattanooga and one year each at Lawson State Community College and Augusta.
  • UNCG concluded last season 21-11 overall and 12-6 in The Southern Conference (SoCon) and it was the seventh year out of eight with 20 or more wins for the Spartans.
  • The Spartans were voted to finish sixth in the 2024-25 SoCon Preseason Coaches' Poll and Atwell was voted to the 2024-25 Preseason All-SoCon team.
  • The Spartans return nine from last year's roster, while adding seven newcomers.

 
SCOUTING WOFFORD

  • Wofford was voted to finish fourth in the 2024-25 SoCon Preseason Coaches Poll.
  • Kyler Filewich was selected to the 2024-25 Preseason All-SoCon Team.
  • The Terriers are on a two-game win streak following victories over Saint Louis University, 74-71, and Kentucky Christian University, 100-55.
  • Three Terriers are pacing the team with double figures, including Corey Tripp (13.4), Filewich (10.6) and Dillon Bailey (10.2).
  • Filewich is dominating the boards with 9.8 rebounds per game.
  • Tripp (3.5) and Filewich (3.4) are leading the team in assists per game.
  • Wofford has the slight edge over its foes in points per game, 74.8-70.8, three-pointers per game, 9.4-8.5, rebounds per game, 39.1-32.0, and steals per game, 6.8-5.9.
  • Among the nation, the Terriers are ranked in the top 50 in five categories, including offensive rebounds per game (17th/14.46), three-point attempts per game (15th/30.3), assists per game (40th/17.1), rebound margin (44th/7.0) and assist/turnover ratio (45th/1.5).
  • Wofford is leading the SoCon in rebound margin and offensive rebounds per game.
