"It's been a dream of mine to compete at a U.S. Amateur and now that I've achieved it, I'm super excited and pumped for this week," said Hernandez. "This event is probably one of the biggest tournaments of my life, so it's a little nerve racking but exciting at the same time. I'm excited to compete against the best college and amateur players in the world and it serves as a test for the upcoming season with the team. I'm just rooting for a good week and with Assistant Coach Dirk Fennie on the bag I feel even more comfortable."

Hernandez claimed first place at the 2024 Golf Puerto Rico Island Amateur Championships at Grand Reserve Golf Club on June 2 to receive an exemption into the 2024 USGA U.S. Amateur. The Caguas, Puerto Rico, native carded rounds of 71-73-73-66 in the four-round event for a total score of five-under-par (283). The 2023-24 Southern Conference (SoCon) Freshman of the Year finished his first season as a Spartan by making UNCG history, becoming the first individual to compete in the NCAA Championship in the Division I era.
