No. 18-Rated Men’s Soccer Packs Bags to Face No. 16 Georgetown

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Rated No. 18 in this week's United Soccer Coaches Poll, the UNC Greensboro (UNCG) men's soccer team hits the road for the first time this regular season, traveling to face the No. 16 Georgetown Hoyas at Shaw Field in Washington, D.C., on Friday at 4:00 p.m.

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Rated No. 18 in this week's United Soccer Coaches Poll, the UNC Greensboro (UNCG) men's soccer team hits the road for the first time this regular season, traveling to face the No. 16 Georgetown Hoyas at Shaw Field in Washington, D.C., on Friday at 4:00 p.m.

UNCG is off to a 2-0-0 start after prevailing 3-0 over USC Upstate last Thursday and 1-0 against Coastal Carolina on Sunday in non-conference action at the UNCG Soccer Stadium.

Following the two victories at home, the Spartans broke into the United Soccer Coaches Poll on Tuesday at No. 18 in the nation. It's the first national ranking for UNCG since appearing at No. 10 in the 2023 preseason poll.

WEEK ONE FOR THE SPARTANS

  • Sophomore Enzo Dovlo scored first again for Spartans in the fourth minute of Sunday's 1-0 victory over Coastal Carolina. The Strasbourg, France, native earned The Southern Conference (SoCon) Offensive Player of the Week after also scoring twice in the opener for a total of three goals on three shots in just two games to begin the season.
  • In goal, redshirt sophomore Seth Wilson earned the SoCon Defensive Player of the Week honor. He made five saves combined, including three in the opener and two more on Sunday, without allowing one goal. In his first season as a Spartan, it marked the third and fourth clean sheets of his career.
  • Fifth year forward Mikey Ketteman scored his first goal as a Spartan late in the season opener before assisting Dovlo on the break in the second game. He ranks second on the Spartans with three points thanks to the goal and assist.
  • Junior forward Colton Sessoms and freshman defender Mohammed Sumaila each have one point for UNCG after assisting on goals back in the season opener.
  • UNCG has totaled 23 corners in just two matches, including 13 in the season opener against USC Upstate, marking the most corner kicks for the Blue & Gold in a single match since Nov. 7, 2021, when UNCG had 20.

UNCG QUICK KICKS

  • With the first installment of the regional polls also coming out alongside the national poll, UNCG earned a No. 4 ranking in the South Region and is the only non-Atlantic Coast Conference school listed. Clemson took the top ranking, followed by Pittsburgh and then Syracuse at No. 3.
  • Among national statistical categories, UNCG is leading Division I in four categories including in save percentage (1.000), shutout percentage (1.000), team goals against average (0.000) and won-lost-tied percentage (1.000).
  • Throughout the SoCon, UNCG is ranked first in corner kicks per game (11.50), penalty kicks, save percentage, shutout percentage, team goals against average and won-lost-tied percentage.
  • The Spartans are in the top 30 in three categories, including second in the nation in corner kicks per game, 12th in goal differential (4) and 29th in total goals (4).
  • UNCG was selected to finish third in the 2024 SoCon Preseason Poll following voting completed by the league's six head coaches. UNCG received one first-place vote.
  • Senior midfielder Basile Marc and sophomore Arnaud Tattevin were named to the 11-member All-SoCon preseason team on Aug. 13.
  • Head Coach Chris Rich is in his sixth season at the helm of UNCG's men's soccer program. He has guided the Spartans to a 48-28-15 (18-5-5 SoCon) record since 2019 and totaled nine or more victories in four of his first five seasons.
  • Under Coach Rich, UNCG has won three SoCon Regular Season titles, won the SoCon Tournament twice and made a pair of NCAA Tournament appearances since 2019.
  • The Spartans' roster has 15 returners this season, which includes six student-athletes who saw action in each of the team's 17 matches a season ago; Emmanuel Hagan and Marc, who started in all 17 competitions, as well as Sessoms, Yoshiya Okawa, Jack Birch and Donovan Roux.
  • The Spartans' roster also consists of 13 newcomers for a total of 28 players on the roster.
  • UNCG's recruiting class was ranked No. 44 in the country by TopDrawerSoccer on Aug. 21 and includes seven transfers and seven incoming freshmen.
  • The new class positionally features a total of four defenders, three goalkeepers, two forwards, two midfielders, one midfielder/forward and one midfielder/defender.
  • In total, the Spartans roster consists of nine forwards, seven midfielders, seven defenders, three goalkeepers and a pair of midfielder/defenders.

SCOUTING THE HOYAS

  • Remaining at No. 16 in this week's edition of the United Soccer Coaches Poll, Georgetown is 1-1-0 after falling 2-0 to Pitt in the season opener on the road and prevailing 2-0 at Maryland on Sunday.
  • Freshman forward Mitchell Baker scored both goals for the Hoyas in Sunday's victory over the Terrapins. Midfielders Eric Howard and Blaine Mabie assisted on Baker's goals in the match.
  • Junior Tenzing Manske was Hoyas' goalkeeper in each of the two matches to start the season. He turned aside three shots in each match.
  • Georgetown won the national title in 2019. Last season the Hoyas finished 13-3-3 overall and 6-1-1 in conference play to win the Big East Regular Season Championship before later falling 1-0 to James Madison in the first round of the NCAA Tournament.
  • The Hoyas were picked to win the Big East again this season. Additionally, three players earned preseason honors. Senior Maximus Jennings was named the Preseason Big East Defensive Player of the Year, and graduate student Marlon Tabora as well as junior Zach Zengue joined Jennings on the Preseason All-Big East team.

THE SERIES HISTORY
In three all-time meetings between UNCG and Georgetown, the Spartans have a 2-1-0 upper hand over the Hoyas. However, Georgetown prevailed 3-0 in the last meeting in Washington, D.C., back on Nov. 18, 2010, during the first round of the NCAA Tournament.
