Men’s Tennis to Host North Carolina A&T Thursday, Compete at Samford Saturday

GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNC Greensboro (UNCG) men's tennis team will host North Carolina A&T (NCAT) in a non-conference dual on Thursday at 2:00 p.m. before traveling to Samford for action in The Southern Conference (SoCon) on Saturday at 1:00 p.m.

SCOUTING THE SPARTANS

  • UNCG is 7-10 overall and 2-2 in the SoCon.
  • The Spartans are coming off a 2-1 week with 5-2 victories over Wofford on Monday and Campbell on Wednesday at the UNCG Tennis Courts before falling 6-1 at Davidson on Saturday.
  • All seven of the Spartans' wins this season have come at home. UNCG is 7-3 at home and 0-7 on the road.
  • William Elmers and John Gabelic are leading the Spartans in doubles with a team-best 6-4 record.
  • Andrew Black and Devon Moskowitz are 6-11 so far while competing in doubles.
  • Tymofiy Khrystyuk and Luke Thomson own a 3-7 mark together in doubles this season.
  • As individuals in doubles, Gabelic and Elmers are the best on the team with 9-6 and 8-7 records, respectively.
  • Moskowitz leads the Spartans with a 12-5 record in singles.
  • Gabelic owns the second-best singles record so far at 9-8.
  • Black is third on the team with an 8-9 mark in singles.
  • Elmers and Khrystyuk each have six wins in singles so far with records of 6-9 and 6-11, respectively.
  • Black and Moskowitz were ranked No. 79 in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Doubles Rankings on Dec. 5, 2024.
  • Black and Moskowitz teamed up to post a 7-0 record and six points for their first national ranking in either singles or doubles. The duo earned its seven wins during the fall season, with a pair during the UNCG Fall Invitational, three at the Davidson Fall Invitational and two more during the Spartan Fall Invitational.
  • The Spartans played in five different tournaments this past fall including the UNCG Fall Invitational, Davidson Fall Invitational, ITA Regional Championships, Spartan Fall Invitational and Wake Forest Fall Invitational.
  • Last season's men's tennis squad finished 6-16 overall with an 0-7 mark in the SoCon.
  • The season ended with a 4-0 loss to top-seeded ETSU in the SoCon Tournament in Chattanooga, Tennessee.
  • Khrystyuk paced the team in singles with a 9-10 record. Gabelic was right behind him with a 9-12 record for the season.
  • Khrystyuk and Thomson led the way for the Spartans in doubles play with a 5-6 record and 2-2 mark in the SoCon.
  • The Spartans have five returning juniors on their roster this season as well as three freshmen (Elmers, Eric Lindemann and Alan Trbonja) who are in their first year at UNCG.
  • Head Coach Jeff Trivette is in his 25th season with UNCG Tennis.

SCOUTING THE AGGIES

  • North Carolina A&T is off to an 11-2 start this season and coming off back-to-back losses at No. 1 Wake Forest, 4-0, on March 16 and at Queens University, 4-1, on March 17.
  • The Aggies opened the season with four straight 7-0 wins over Bluefield State, Belmont Abbey, Shaw and USC Sumter from Feb. 14-27.
  • NCAT has three doubles pairings with seven or more wins this season. They are: Jindrich Brill and Lucas Coupu-Moison (8-2), Said Akbarov and Ian Pedersen (7-2) and Mathieu Dussaubat and Kaua Santos (7-4).
  • Brill owns the best singles record at 10-1.
  • Akbarov is second on the squad with a 10-2 mark in singles.
  • Pedersen (9-3), Dussaubat (9-4) and Santos (9-4) each own nine-win records.
  • Pedersen earned his first-ever conference weekly honor on March 18 when the Coastal Athletic Association (CAA) named him its co-player of the week in men's tennis.
  • The Aggies finished last season with a 15-5 record before ending the campaign with a 4-2 loss to the College of Charleston in the first round of the CAA Tournament.
  • Head Coach Dejon Bivens has been at the helm of the Aggie men's tennis program since Aug. 16, 2021, and been a part of the program since 2017.

SCOUTING THE BULLDOGS

  • Samford is riding a 14-4 overall record and perfect 4-0 mark so far in SoCon action.
  • The Bulldogs have earned five straight wins, including a 7-0 victory most recently on Friday while hosting Chattanooga.
  • Samford is led in doubles by Sebastian Harrison and Vitorio Sardinha, who have combined for an 8-1 record together.
  • Sandeep Mohandoes leads the Bulldogs in singles victories with a 14-3 record.
  • Last season saw the Bulldogs finish with a 15-8 record and 6-1 mark in the SoCon.
  • The Bulldogs are under the tutelage of Head Coach Oliver Reynolds and Assistant Coach Maxwell Giddens.

UP NEXT
The Spartans will travel to Macon, Georgia, for their final SoCon test on the road at Mercer on April 6 at 1:00 p.m. before returning home to host UNC Asheville on April 8 at 3:00 p.m. at the UNCG Tennis Courts.

UNCG will then conclude the regular season with its final SoCon test, hosting Chattanooga on April 12 at noon at the UNCG Tennis Courts.
