Men’s Tennis Packs Bags to Face James Madison on Thursday

SCOUTING THE SPARTANS

  • UNCG is 5-8 overall and 1-2 in The Southern Conference (SoCon).
  • The Spartans are coming off a 5-1 setback after hosting the Bucknell Bison on Monday afternoon at the UNCG Tennis Courts.
  • All five of the the Spartans' wins this season have come at home. UNCG is 5-3 at home and 0-5 on the road.
  • William Elmers and John Gabelic are leading the Spartans in doubles with a team-best 6-4 record.
  • Andrew Black and Devon Moskowitz are 5-8 so far while competing in doubles.
  • Tymofiy Khrystyuk and Luke Thomson own a 3-7 mark in doubles this season.
  • Moskowitz leads the Spartans with a 9-4 record in singles.
  • Gabelic owns the second-best singles record so far at 7-6.
  • Elmers is third on the team with a 5-6 mark in singles.
  • Black and Moskowitz were ranked No. 79 in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Doubles Rankings on Dec. 5, 2024.
  • Black and Moskowitz teamed up to post a 7-0 record and six points for their first national ranking in either singles or doubles. The duo earned its seven wins during the fall season, with a pair during the UNCG Fall Invitational, three at the Davidson Fall Invitational and two more during the Spartan Fall Invitational.
  • The Spartans played in five different tournaments this past fall including the UNCG Fall Invitational, Davidson Fall Invitational, ITA Regional Championships, Spartan Fall Invitational and Wake Forest Fall Invitational.
  • Last season's men's tennis squad finished 6-16 overall with an 0-7 mark in the SoCon.
  • The season ended with a 4-0 loss to top-seeded ETSU in the SoCon Tournament in Chattanooga, Tennessee.
  • Khrystyuk paced the team in singles with a 9-10 record. Gabelic was right behind him with a 9-12 record for the season.
  • Khrystyuk and Thomson led the way for the Spartans in doubles play with a 5-6 record and 2-2 mark in the SoCon.
  • The Spartans have five returning juniors on their roster this season as well as three freshmen (Elmers, Eric Lindemann and Alan Trbonja) who are in their first year at UNCG.
  • Head Coach Jeff Trivette is in his 25th season with UNCG Tennis.

SCOUTING THE DUKES

  • James Madison is 4-4 overall and coming off a 4-3 victory at home over William & Mary.
  • The Dukes are led in doubles by Aurelien Schmitt and Esteve Agusti, who have teamed up for 15-7 record.
  • Schmitt and Agusti also lead James Madison with 14 wins each in singles. Schmitt is 14-10 while Agusti owns a 14-8 mark in singles.
  • Markus Giersiepen is third on the team in singles wins with a 10-11 record.
  • Last year saw the Dukes finish the season with a 7-14 overall record and 0-8 mark in the Sun Belt. They ended the campaign with nine straight losses, including the final one in the first round of the Sun Belt Conference Championship, 4-2, to Coastal Carolina.
  • James Madison men's tennis is under the guidance of Head Coach Steve Secord and Assistant Coach Vidit Vaghela.

 
SERIES HISTORY VS. JAMES MADISON
The Spartans are 2-4 in the all-time series against the Dukes, which dates back to the first meeting on March 4, 1988.

James Madison has had the upper hand in the previous two meetings, winning 4-3 last season on March 10, 2024, after earning a 6-1 victory two years ago on March 8, 2023.
