Men’s Tennis to Host Saturday Doubleheader Against Belmont Abbey

GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNC Greensboro (UNCG) men's tennis team is ready to face Belmont Abbey twice on Saturday at the UNCG Tennis Courts with the first match beginning at 11:00 a.m. before the second at 3:00 p.m.

SCOUTING THE SPARTANS

  • After starting out 0-2, UNCG is now 2-3 overall after winning two of its last three matches.
  • The Spartans wins have both come at home, defeating USC Sumter, 7-0, at the UNCG Tennis Courts on Feb. 7 before edging out Longwood at Piedmont Indoor Tennis Center, 4-3, on Feb. 15.
  • UNCG is 2-0 at home and 0-3 on the road this season.
  • William Elmers and John Gabelic are leading the Spartans in doubles with a team-best 4-1 record.
  • Andrew Black and Devon Moskowitz are 3-2 so far while competing in doubles.
  • Tymofiy Khrystyuk and Luke Thomson own a 1-3 mark in doubles this season.
  • Moskowitz leads the Spartans with a 4-1 record in singles.
  • Black and Gabelic are second in singles so far with each owning a 3-2 record.
  • Black and Moskowitz were ranked No. 79 in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Doubles Rankings on Dec. 5, 2024.
  • Black and Moskowitz teamed up to post a 7-0 record and six points for their first national ranking in either singles or doubles. The duo earned its seven wins during the fall season, with a pair during the UNCG Fall Invitational, three at the Davidson Fall Invitational and two more during the Spartan Fall Invitational.
  • The Spartans played in five different tournaments this past fall including the UNCG Fall Invitational, Davidson Fall Invitational, ITA Regional Championships, Spartan Fall Invitational and Wake Forest Fall Invitational.
  • Last season's men's tennis squad finished 6-16 overall with an 0-7 mark in The Southern Conference (SoCon).
  • The season ended with a 4-0 loss to top-seeded ETSU in the SoCon Tournament in Chattanooga, Tennessee.
  • Khrystyuk paced the team in singles with a 9-10 record. Gabelic was right behind him with a 9-12 record for the season.
  • Khrystyuk and Luke Thomson led the way for the Spartans in doubles play with a 5-6 record and 2-2 mark in the SoCon.
  • The Spartans have five returning juniors on their roster this season as well as three freshmen (Elmers, Eric Lindemann and Alan Trbonja) who are in their first year at UNCG.
  • Head Coach Jeff Trivette is in his 25th season with UNCG Tennis.

SCOUTING THE CRUSADERS

  • Belmont Abbey owns a 3-9 record overall and has dropped four straight dating back to Feb. 10.
  • The Crusaders have 38 student-athletes on their men's tennis roster.
  • Ricard Novell paces the team with a 3-1 singles record.
  • Jon Bayo and Jonas Berglund as well as Marcus Bergelin and Cameron Simpson each own 2-0 records for doubles, which is tied for the team lead.
  • Belmont Abbey concluded the 2023-24 campaign 25-19 overall with a 6-2 record in the Conference Carolinas.
  • After winning three straight matches in the Conference Carolinas Tournament, the Crusaders season ended with a 5-0 loss to No. 2-seed Columbus State in their first match at the NCAA Division II Southeast Regional.
  • Belmont Abbey's men' tennis team is under the direction of Head Coach Michael Salomon as well as Assistant Coaches Jacob Andress and Molly Hencken.

UNCG VS. BELMONT ABBEY SERIES HISTORY
Saturday will mark the second and third all-time meetings between the Spartans and Crusaders. UNCG thumped Belmont Abbey, 7-0, in the first-ever matchup between the two back on Feb. 1, 2024, in Greensboro.
